Commercial Description:
Black ale with aromas and flavours of vanilla, dark chocolate, bourbon and roasted malt. The vanilla and cocoa marry nicely, without out-competing each other, to produce a surprisingly well balanced beer. This beer is mildly hoppy, but the cocoa introduces a touch of bitterness. Its colour may be intimidating, but it is a very smooth beer within reach of most beer drinkers. This highly appreciated dessert beer is brewed with organic fair-trade cocoa and first rate vanilla beans.

11.5oz bottle. Who does that? I would buy this beer again just for the label art, but the beer is also awesome, so I guess it’s a win-win. Standard stout appearance with an average head. Looks good but not exceptional. The aroma is a great example of what can be done with the roastiness in a stout. Add some vanilla and chocolate, and you have sensory overload. There is no denying the confectionary qualities here, and burnt sugar bounces smoothly off of chocolate cake, vanilla frosting, and a little salty licorice. After anticipating a cupcake in the aroma, the flavor is actually pretty dry and has a solid roasty, dark chocolate bitterness in the finish, while still having a nice maltiness up front. This is actually in the border of a completely quaffable stout that only pretends to be a dessert sipper. The body is somewhere near the middle and seems about right for a 6.5% beer. Delicious stuff all around, that combines intoxicating aromas with a well balanced and very drinkable liquid. I’d take this over peche mortel any day.

12 oz. bottle from maltomeal. Pours an inky black color with a small tan head that quickly becomes a ring. The aroma is a wonderful blend of sweet milk chocolate, vanilla beans, roasted malts with the slightest hint of caramel dipped sugary coffee. The flavor is nicely roasted malt, coffee with vanilla cream, chocolate, with some bitterness in the finish. This turned out to be drier and not as sweet as the nose indicated. I love the use of cocoa and vanilla bean with this beer; nothing too over the top. Medium bodied and very smooth drinking. This is the more refined Felix to the bolder Oscar that is Southern Tier Choklat. Forget just desserts, I could drink this almost anytime. Rating #372 for this beer.

I tried this beer on December 18, 2009 at "Smokeless Joe’s" in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The beer poured a blackics colour with a thin tan head. The aroma was roasted malt, vanilla, molasses, and chocolate. The mouthfeel was medium bodied with medium carbonation, yet slightly creamy. The flavour was sweet roasted malt, coffee, some vailla, and a bitter finish.

Sample at the "From Russia With Suds" tasting on 01/02/10: This brew pours black with a light brown head that diminishes slowly. Large patches of lacing on the glass. Aroma of roasted malt, vanilla beans and coffee. Rich body with a strong roasted malt and chocolate profile. Flavors of mocha, black cherry and vanilla as well. The finish is dry and roasty with a lingering coffee aftertaste. Hard to find much wrong with this Stout overall.

Bottle. Blackish beer with a tan head. Chocolate and vanilla aroma with sweet malt. Milk chocolate flavor with light roast, vanilla, and sweet malt. Medium-plus bodied. Milk chocolate lingers with sweet malt and vanilla.

drank out of pint glass. pitch black with a thick moka head that creates a heavy lacing throughout the beer. aroma is chocolate, vanilla, and roasted malts. a milkshake at 6.5% abv! like the label says, this beer is a beautiful marriage between chocolate and vanilla, though i do think the chocolate is a bit more apparent. thick on the palate, medium carbonation, an almost silky mouthfeel. this is my favorite "everyday" beer, the kind of beer i have in my refrigerator at all times. the only stout better than this one, is aphrodisiaque fresh from the tap at Dieu du Ciel!

Bottle from a trade with Boutip. Viscous black pour with light brown head. Lots of chocolate and vanilla in the aroma. Flavors of roasted malts, bittersweet chocolate and vanilla. Medium to full body with soft carbonation and a creamy mouthfeel. Excellent. Thanks Phil.

351 mL bottle. Deep chestnut brown with a lovely tan head. The aroma is lovely and complex - roast, vanilla, milk chocolate, and licorice. Much the same for the flavour, except that the chocolate comes to the front a little more, and there is only a hint of licorice. Nice balance, though. Slightly grainy mouthfeel. Good body and carbonation. Incredibly appealing beer.
