COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This beer style was created in the late 1990’s by some breweries on the west coast of the United States, and most notably by Rogue. It’s an extreme version of the American IPA. It’s a beer with strong amber hues and dominating hop flavours and tastes. It is however well balanced through the presence of a combination of malts. This beer is usually dry hopped, a tradition that is adhered to by Dieu du Ciel!. The bouquet of the beer consists of floral hops. In the mouth, the bitterness is quite strong, without being extreme, and the alcohol makes its presence known, without being domineering. The aftertaste is dry and less syrupy than a barley wine. Thus, it is a very complex and bitter beer, but always well balanced.

Floral and citrusy (orange) hop nose. Copper coloured with pillowy, white head that laces well. Strong and very sweet with dominant orange fruitiness. Fairly sticky in the mouth. Medium body. On tap at the brewpub (Aged 9 months).

UPDATED: MAY 17, 2005 Cask-conditioned Clear amber appearance with red suggestions and a yellowish thin head. Aroma is very fresh, mostly from grassy herbal hops. A very "green" aroma with hints at salt and pepper. The mouthfeel is top notch, big and creamy medium body, ultra-smooth and convincing/appealing. Herbal grassy bitterness all the way with earthy peaks. Caramelic malt shines through in the middle while the finish is crisp and leaves a salty aftertaste. A very fresh tasting ale and better than the Rogue I2PA it was inspired from in my opinion.

Hazy dark orange in colour. Aroma was nicely hopped, citrus (oranges and lemons). Flavour was quite hoppy, with oranges and caramel. Some alcohol. Finish is a strong bitterness with just a bit of alcohol coming through.

UPDATED: AUG 12, 2008 Palate healing through chewable hop medicine...Orange seeds are planted and watered with silky caramel...A great conifer rises and points to the surrounding spirits...

A 1-year-old bottle (aged at the brewpub for on-site consumption) proved to be still quite hoppy in the nose, flavor and bitterness, but in a much more diplomatic way. Carbonation is more vivacious as well, straddling Belgian and American stylings. A creature which is evolving well, in part due to its rich maltiness.

Orange/amber colour, small but lasting head. Fresh hop and caramel aroma. With a 8.5% ABV, this beer has a warming caramel flavour mixed with nicely balanced resinous bitterness. For their first try at an Imperial pale ale, this is a very nice brew.
