COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This beer style was created in the late 1990’s by some breweries on the west coast of the United States, and most notably by Rogue. It’s an extreme version of the American IPA. It’s a beer with strong amber hues and dominating hop flavours and tastes. It is however well balanced through the presence of a combination of malts. This beer is usually dry hopped, a tradition that is adhered to by Dieu du Ciel!. The bouquet of the beer consists of floral hops. In the mouth, the bitterness is quite strong, without being extreme, and the alcohol makes its presence known, without being domineering. The aftertaste is dry and less syrupy than a barley wine. Thus, it is a very complex and bitter beer, but always well balanced.

RBSG05 Bottle from 02/05. Spicy, piney, peppery aroma with some sweetness. Hazy copper/orange color with a yellowish head. Mildly bitter and hoppy to start, turning malty and very mellow. Kind of boring finish. There are nice malts in this with little alcohol present. Nice, but not as aggressively hopped as I would like from an IIPA. Granted, this is 5 months old, so the hops may have mellowed in fairness to the brewer.

RBSG bottle #50 2005 This started out with a huge, creamy light brown head that stayed the whole time. Medium amber color. Light malt and piney hop aroma. Smooth full palate delivers a nicely hopped crisp IPA with a good malt to hop balance in the flavor.

Poured the yeast end of the bottle, but I got a good whiff of leafy, grassy hops in the nose, reminding me of the Stone 5th with how much of an aged or oxidized quality exists. Bitter, dry and scorching wood once again, a common quality in DDC beer. A decent beer.

Pour was copper amber with a nice dense tan head...smell is sweet caramel and pine...the taste is absolutely great...delicate balance between malt/hops...it is interesting for an IIPA...great stuff...

2005 RBSG - 660ml bottle shared with several others. I detect yeastly banana in the nose. Strange for an IIPA. Dry, sticky, sweet - mildly hoppy - unimpressive, run of the mill, maybe a little below average. This just doesn’t stand out as an Imperial India Pale Ale. Very cool that I had the chance to sample, however.

(660ml bottle) Sampled at RBSG 2005 in Montreal. Mildly cloudy, copper amber body with a thin, white head. Nose of nail polish, iodine, red licorice and malt. The flavours of a weed blender - Hi-C Hops, hemp and oranges. Nice lasting and smooth malty finish.

2005 RBSG Montreal Saturday. 2005 bottle at the brewpub. Hazy orange amber colour with a frothy and bubbly off-white head. Piny, citrus (grapefruit and lime), caramel, and light alcohol aroma. Caramel, bread and orange flavours with a pine, citrus, grapefruit, and limy bitter finish. Full bodied, lightly sticky, but still smooth.

RBSG 2005... Poured a hazy orange color with a thin, off white head that left nice lacing on the glass. Aroma of tons of citrus hops, spices, and light maple syrup. Taste of crisp orange hops, lots of citrus, light caramel malt, and a touch of alcohol.

Lightly hazy copper bronze with a well lacing off-white head. Dry, grainy, lightly toasted and hoppy aroma. Body is lightly sweet and caramely with some sticky toffee and a good, but not very potent hoppy balance. Not quite as extreme as some American versions, but a very drinkable double pale ale.
