This beer style was created in the late 1990’s by some breweries on the west coast of the United States, and most notably by Rogue. It’s an extreme version of the American IPA. It’s a beer with strong amber hues and dominating hop flavours and tastes. It is however well balanced through the presence of a combination of malts. This beer is usually dry hopped, a tradition that is adhered to by Dieu du Ciel!. The bouquet of the beer consists of floral hops. In the mouth, the bitterness is quite strong, without being extreme, and the alcohol makes its presence known, without being domineering. The aftertaste is dry and less syrupy than a barley wine. Thus, it is a very complex and bitter beer, but always well balanced.

In 341 ml bottle. Pours a deep copper/orange hue with an off-white, pillowy head; leaves some prominent rings of lacing around the glass. Pleasing aroma of light caramel malts intermingled with strong floral and citrus hop notes. Nice resinous hop profile dominates the flavor, though nicely muted by the malt all the way through the tasting. Quite dry in the finish with a lingering astringency and mild alcoholic heat. Great smooth mouth-feel, the soft carbonation really creates an easy drinking experience and allows the hops to come through as much as possible. Another resounding success from DDC.

On tap at the Mondial. Clear orange with amber hints and an eggshell head that leaves very little lace. Big resinous hops and caramel malt with a hint of chocolate. A little strange. Starts out with sweet caramel that moves into a resinous/floral hop middle and the caramel mingles back in for the finish. A little astringent.

Bottle thanks to Dany. Pours burnt orange with white head. Good lacing. Nose/taste of caramel, pale and sweet malts with spicy hops. Taste also has some grapefruit rind. Slightly bitter. Full body. A bit boozy at times.

Bouteille.

341ml bottle from Broue Ha Ha. Clear amber, almost no head, fresh hops, sugar, bit of floral highlights but light. Oddly sweet at the start, not as bitter as I expected, muted hop profile but nice and dry, buttery on the palate. Alcohol is very well hidden, overall a very well balanced DIPA but prefer that in an IPA versus a DIPA that I would like to overwhelm me with hops. Still might have to go back and buy some more.

UPDATED: JUN 6, 2012 Another outstanding effort from an always exciting brewery. Reminds me a lot of DFH 90, although maybe the hops are a tiny bit more muted than that one. Still, great hop-forward beer with a level of malt balance that makes this an outstanding beer. Bravo! Jul 2012 update: Pours orange with thin white head medium lacing. Not as sweet as I seemed notice last year, certainly not as much as dfh 90. Beauty balance on this one,ots of grapefruit with a light candy backing. Awesome beer.
