COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This beer style was created in the late 1990’s by some breweries on the west coast of the United States, and most notably by Rogue. It’s an extreme version of the American IPA. It’s a beer with strong amber hues and dominating hop flavours and tastes. It is however well balanced through the presence of a combination of malts. This beer is usually dry hopped, a tradition that is adhered to by Dieu du Ciel!. The bouquet of the beer consists of floral hops. In the mouth, the bitterness is quite strong, without being extreme, and the alcohol makes its presence known, without being domineering. The aftertaste is dry and less syrupy than a barley wine. Thus, it is a very complex and bitter beer, but always well balanced.

Bottle at worldbeertaste’s temporary leaving The Hague tasting. Poured a slightly hazy medium amber with a very thin white head. The aroma is hoppy glue, resin. The flavour is strong bitter with a light fruit resin smooth alcoholic woody palate. Medium bodied with soft carbonation and a slightly oily mouthfeel. A super flavour packed beer with well controlled alcohol.

Amber with a thin, white, lacy, somewhat lasting head. Smells of peach, sweet malt, grape and apple. Medium to full oily body. Tastes of frothy sweet malt, with apples, nuts, figs and a slightly yeasty sour finish.

Understated nose featuring slightly roasted sweet malt and a hint of caramel. A nice orangey brown hue. The taste is very malt forward with hints of caramel, soft hops and some alcohol warmth. Moderate carbonation leads to a soft rich taste that is well balanced. Nevertheless, this is no hop bomb. The rich sweet yet dark malts are the highlight of this very drinkable strong ale.

Imperial pale ale, I take this to mean not quite an ipa or imperial ipa. It’s not too hoppy on the nose or tongue, but rings true to me as a hop forward strong pale ale. Not bad, not fantastic.

Pours a slightly hazy amber-copper colour with a large white head that slowly settles and sticks all up the glass. Aroma is tropical fruits, oranges, earthy and some alcohol. Flavour is resin, mild alcohol, medium-high bitterness, tropical fruits, citrus and a little residual sugar.
