This beer style was created in the late 1990ís by some breweries on the west coast of the United States, and most notably by Rogue. Itís an extreme version of the American IPA. Itís a beer with strong amber hues and dominating hop flavours and tastes. It is however well balanced through the presence of a combination of malts. This beer is usually dry hopped, a tradition that is adhered to by Dieu du Ciel!. The bouquet of the beer consists of floral hops. In the mouth, the bitterness is quite strong, without being extreme, and the alcohol makes its presence known, without being domineering. The aftertaste is dry and less syrupy than a barley wine. Thus, it is a very complex and bitter beer, but always well balanced.

Poured a murky orange which became clear after settling. White fizzy head with no lace. Aroma of floral hops, pine, spices, citrus and something else which I canít quite place. Tastes the same with almost chocolatey sweet malts being hinted at in the profile. Alcohol heat is there but not dominating which is nice. A very drinkable strong IPA.

Bottle 3/13, 12C. Almost clear amber with a white head. Aroma has wintery oranges, mandarins, earthy mango, wood, dough, noticeable alcohol. Lowish carbonation, very soft in the mouth.Sticky, but short of syrupy. Sweet and doughy with lots of mellow citrus flavours, some peach and pine. Not all that bitter and it dries out slowly, lifting the sweetness away gradually. Citrus and floral notes linger, some mild spices too. Strange (baffling, really, reading the blurb, but I guess this is old) - reminds me a little of De Dolle Stille Nacht, but of Roguelike IIPAs not at all. Which is quite OK by me.

From a 341ml bottle on 20/12/2013. Pours a slightly cloudy very dark golden with a tiny head. Has a quite unusual aroma dominated by an array of fruits, particularly mandarin, tangerine and mango, with some toffee and molasses. Flavour wise, thereís a background of toffee, with some marzipan and lots of sweet fruit (orange, mandarin, peach, mango). The bitterness is firm but modest by DIPA standards. The palate is syrupy and the carbonation modest. Very easy drinking for 9%. The blurb suggests this is an attempt at a US west coast style imperial, but it comes across as something quite singular and unusual, which is a positive. Not what I was expecting but still very nice indeed. Just donít expect a real hop bomb.

341 ml bottle. Bottled on 03/13. From saveur-biere.com.
Cloudy golden colour with an average sized foamy off-white head. Very dark hops, caramel sweetness, berries, bitterness and malt in the aroma. The flavour is really nice. Darkish hops, mild bitterness, mild sweetness and malt. No hop or sweetness overdose. Balanced and enjoyable.

Bottle from the LCBO. Pours a hazy orange with small beige head that clings to the glass. Nose is oranges, honey, grass and cognac with a metallic tang to it. Taste is sweet mandarin orange and an alcohol edge with some metallic bitterness in the long finish. Medium creamy body with medium soft carbonation. Quite a lot going on here, but I find the metallic taste a bit distracting.

UPDATED: MAY 4, 2014 Bottle. Pours a dark orange amber with a decent-sized, off-white head. Aroma hits you right off the pour with a load of caramel. Thereís a whiff of something hoppy, but not much. Taste follows along the lines of caramel, some fermented fruit and a bit of grain. Quite a hit of ethanol, perhaps a bit of sourness. Not much in the way of hops. Disappointing. Stiff and well carbonated.

UPDATED: OCT 5, 2013 Bootled March/2013. offered via glouglouburp courtesy toss, for whatever that is worth. aroma of sticky raisins, melon, caramel syrup. seems more like a barley wine, bub! taste is green raisin sweetness cut by faded spruce/pine hop. raisined dough. touch too syrupy for my liking, but not bad. pleasant booze/resin left on the pallet. okay, but not really my thing.

Pours a hazy orangish bronze with a small off white foamy head. Aroma of grass, honey, pale malts, resin, orange and other fruity floral esters. Taste is grass, sweet orange, honey, caramel and a nice alcohol warmth throughout. Medium carbonation with a nice smooth bitterness throughout. Nice full body and flavor yet so easy to drink for a 9 percent beer.

Light orange pour with a white head. Flavor is fruity and malty up front followed by a light hop presence. Belgian style IPA in my opinion. A bit too much malt and the hops arenít fresh tasting.

Bottle from Mane Liquor. A little disappointed with this. Very resinous and sticky with heavy focus on sweet fruits. Quite boozy too. Not what I would have thought it would be. Possibly not fresh at all
