COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This beer style was created in the late 1990ís by some breweries on the west coast of the United States, and most notably by Rogue. Itís an extreme version of the American IPA. Itís a beer with strong amber hues and dominating hop flavours and tastes. It is however well balanced through the presence of a combination of malts. This beer is usually dry hopped, a tradition that is adhered to by Dieu du Ciel!. The bouquet of the beer consists of floral hops. In the mouth, the bitterness is quite strong, without being extreme, and the alcohol makes its presence known, without being domineering. The aftertaste is dry and less syrupy than a barley wine. Thus, it is a very complex and bitter beer, but always well balanced.

Definitely an imp pale ale and not an IPA - just as they say. All the characteristics of a good pale, just ramped up.

Bottle. Golden, light coppery. Sweet malty, soft peachy stony fruity nose with a bit of milky vanilla. Full bodied, butterscotch in flavour. Pretty good. Stone fruityness, smooth maltyness. Sweet finish. Pretty nice. Sweet, without cloying. Flavourful, nice. Hasnít any extreme flavours, but everything is just nicely balanced.

Deep gold, cloudy with white head. Aroma is juicy grapefruit, peaches and cream. Full bodied. Loads of citrus and big sweet malt character. Grapefruit citrus finish lingers. Solid.

Pours a deep golden sienna color with a finger of eggshell foam. Nose is sweet caramel, bready malts, citrus and some earthy grass. Palate follows with more sweetness, honey, citrus, boozy and lingering bitter grass finish. Probably a bit past its prime but still drinking pretty nice.

341 ml bottle. Pours a deep copper color with light white head. Aromas of sweet malts, bread dough, and a little fruity hops. Flavors of toasted malts, light toffee, brown sugar, and bitter hops. Big sugary malts up front followed by a bitter middle and a mixed finish. Neat.

Guest tap at Beermarkt in Montreal. Pours a hazy copper with a thick luxurious white head. Aromas of citrus hops a bit but with lots of honey sweetness an some fruity perfume. Tastes of hops, fruit peels, with a great balance between sweet and bitterness. The high abv is only slightly noticeable. Overall this one is very hard to pigeon hole as it has so much going on and is wonderfully complex. Great beer!

Poured light reddish amber with a small off white head. Aroma of sweet caramel malt, light fruitiness. Medium to full body, flavour is candy sweetness, heavy citrus hops, dry, bitter finish. Good, but not my taste.

341ml bottle. Hazy golden orange with a foamy white head. Flavors are honey, caramel, toasted malts, sugar, cooked vegetables, resin, lemon, grapefruit peel and alcohol with floral and spicy notes. Medium to full body, moderate carbonation, syrupy and oily texture.

Pours a lightly hazed dark golden with a medium offwhite head that leaves good lacing. Nose is a bit raw with hops but also some alcohol. The hops arenít quite fruity or piny or whatever, just generally hoppy with some oils and alcohol mixed in. Taste moderately high bitterness chased by some caramel-like sweetness. Flavors are fruity and perfumey, not that bright. Alcohol is pretty noticeable (an understatement) and finish is mouth drying and really bitter (but not quite harsh). Body is medium-full and carbonation moderate. Texture is sticky and almost syrupy. I remember liking this one a whole lot more but now it is kind of average.

Pours a hazy orange with one finger of creamy persistent head, settling gradually back to a dense cap and heavy lacing. Nose is caramel malt, flowery hops, with faint citrus and pineapple. Taste is similar, but with an added buttery flavour, a slight alcohol warming, and a bitter finish. Mouth feel is medium to heavy-bodied, starting creamy and finishing sticky and off-dry. Not entirely what I was expecting for an IIPA. The flavours are much earthier, and the malt more pronounced, with no sharp hoppiness or West Coast dankness. Iím not entirely sure what Iíd call this style, but I like it. Mellow and muted, but still very well balanced and drinkable.

AgentAle (605) - Alberta, CANADA - MAY 21, 2014
Aroma is deep earthy hop notes with some hints of citrus and tanin. Taste is a very rich with a hop presence that arrives immediately. The mirky/earthy tones are dominant but the sweet roasty malt and caramel can be detected. Faint notes of belgian candy sugar and dark fruit. Slight tang and alcohol snap on finish. Appearance is a dark gold with a lace pearl head that retains fairly.
