COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This beer style was created in the late 1990’s by some breweries on the west coast of the United States, and most notably by Rogue. It’s an extreme version of the American IPA. It’s a beer with strong amber hues and dominating hop flavours and tastes. It is however well balanced through the presence of a combination of malts. This beer is usually dry hopped, a tradition that is adhered to by Dieu du Ciel!. The bouquet of the beer consists of floral hops. In the mouth, the bitterness is quite strong, without being extreme, and the alcohol makes its presence known, without being domineering. The aftertaste is dry and less syrupy than a barley wine. Thus, it is a very complex and bitter beer, but always well balanced.

Orange/amber colour, small but lasting head. Fresh hop and caramel aroma. With a 8.5% ABV, this beer has a warming caramel flavour mixed with nicely balanced resinous bitterness. For their first try at an Imperial pale ale, this is a very nice brew.

Billed as an Imperial Pale, this stuff kicks some serous ass. Clear light amber color and a small resiliant head. Aroma of wet hops and light spices. Taste is hoppy again with some citrus (peach?) and flowers. Not a West Coast hop animal but a smooth, creamy IIPA.

Nice amber color. Sweet hop aroma. Smooth mouthfeel with sweet malts and grapefruit hops. Very drinkable and I didn’t notice any alcohol flavor.

[Brewed February 2005, sampled July 2005] An unclear amber beer with a small orange head. The aroma is very hoppy and grassy combined with notes of lemon. The flavor is sweet with lots of hops and alfa acids, but also some notes of wood. Nice for a five months old IIPA - I’d love to taste this fresh.

[Snifter(s) @ the brewpub, 9%] Pours a dark copper color with the usual dense, standard DDC head. Surprisingly mellow citrus aroma, with some yeast and subtle fruits. Flavors are citrusy C-hops all the way. Comparable to many American-style IIPAs, Chaman has a more earthy, complex hop profile, with a warming alcohol finish. Overall, I really enjoyed this brew. Excellent.

Bottle from mondial de la bière. A clear amber red beer with low head. Nose is hopy, resinous and honey like. Aroma is nutty(walnut) ! dry with almond and floral notes, wood notes, grassy, grapefruit, very complex ipa, coconut, bitter, quite uncommon ipa but full of flavor, nice.

Mondial de la Bière 2011, Strasbourg - cloudy copper-orange beer with a decent head retention; a solid flowery and fruity hoppiness (peach/apricots); full-bodied, some sweetness and a robust bitterness; long hoppy flowery and fruity finish with notes of warming alcohol

Thumb up!
