4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 Savvy1982 (1443) - Lethbridge, - JUL 12, 2011
Bottle at home. Bought as dozen of these, this review is both a review of my last individual bottle, and my thoughts on the dozen I have consumed over the past month. First off, I wouldn’t call this an IIPA, the hop notes are too muted, and the beer just doesn’t strike me as your classic PNW IIPA. Nor is it heavy enough, sweet enough, or spicy enough to be an ’English-inspired’ IIPA. No, this is more of an Imperial Pale Ale, a term I just made up right now. The hop notes are soft in the nose, and some complexity is there, but the balance is half hops, half malt, much like an APA. The palate is bittersweet as you would expect, but not as bitter, nor as caramel-driven as you would expect from an IIPA. This is something.... else. The beer pours hazy orange/copper, with a thick orangey-beige head, that laces very well. Nose is honey, delicate juniper and spruce hops, with just a light touch of citrus that is more marmalade than it is grapefruit. That isn;t to say that this is in the ’hopelessly sticky and overly malty’ realm, it isn’t. Far from it actually. The mouthfeel is honestly quite stunning. At first I hated it, then I was ambivalent, then I regretted getting 12 of these, but eventually I rather came around on this beer. The flavour and mouthfeel are very similar to say, Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, but turned up to 11. Like I said, an Imperial Pale Ale. Different, challenging, and right on the border between brilliant and badly-made. Being this is Dieu du Ciel, and I have really come to quite like it, I’ll go with Brilliant, but just barely. A fascinating brew that I imagine is going to score all over the place.

Fruity and wonderful. Not sure why not just a normal IPA. There is some apple-juiciness. Strong profile here. On tap at DDC.

Bottle: Thanks to Pushkinwow:
Mine said 9% alcohol.
Medium vast off white (with a light yellow tint) head that disappears slow, on top of a hazy warm and darker orange colored beer.
Smell hops, pine, resin, citrus, light honey, some sweets, roosvicee, rosehip, barleys and light sweet malts.
Taste good hoppy and creamy with citrus, pine and yeasty tins. Well balanced. Medium bitter.
Also hints of grass, pine apple, light peach, light dry.
Tasty, balanced and not too much.
Herb hoppy grassy light bitter aftertaste.
Low to medium carbo, soft and light tingly mouthfeel, full body and a creamy texture.
The alcohol is not noticeable, nice! Overall a good beer with nice balanced creamy body.
3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 gramity (601) - Edmonton, Alberta, CANADA - DEC 13, 2011
Translucent copper-orange with a small but sticky beige head. The appealing aroma has lots of citrus from the hops, but also a strong note of caramel from the malt . The flavour is great, with strong bitterness from start to finish, some of which seems to come from the alcohol. The cara-malts are well represented. Alcohol is very apparent in the finish, but its pleasant. Great body.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 Boystout (1000) - Chisinau, MOLDOVA - DEC 6, 2011
3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 reebtogi (2169) - Edmonton, Alberta, CANADA - NOV 30, 2011
341ml bottle listed at 9%ABV pours a pale amber color with a big off-white head which settles slowly leaving some elegant lacing on the glass. Aroma is floral and citrusy hops with some toasted malts. Taste is floral and citrusy hops balanced beautifully with a malty sweetness and a hint of alcohol. A very nice DIPA with a medium body and adequate carbonation. Highly recommended.
4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 18/20 VincentL (157) - montrйal, Quebec, CANADA - NOV 19, 2011
Goыt : Wow!
Thumb up!
