COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This shimmering gold amber coloured beer has a light, smoked malt aroma. It’s well-rounded, with a great taste of malts and with a hint of sweetness. The smoky taste is quite dominant at each new draught. An original and notable beer, La Charbonnière is a house specialty.

Aroma: Smoke, firewood and nothing else. Only fire Appearance: Clear, brown, with few head that is diminishing fast and no lacing. Taste: Smoke is all over and killing all other flavors. Texture is thin and light. I once said that smoke beers are not my bag and it’s certainly not this one that is going to change my mind. Boquébière’s Porter Fumé was clearly ahead. Sorry Dieu du Ciel, missed with me on this one.

pours clear light brown, red tint, with a small light beige head, little retention. hickory, never bacon-ish, decent malts, some caramel, light herbal-grassy notes, short but present grassy finish. light body - lacking, average carbonation. seriously disappointed here.

341mL bottle, pours a clear dark amber with a small beige head. Aroma is an ashtray and smokepit, not much else. Flavour is a potent mix of ashtray, smoke, cigarette butt, etc. I don’t understand how people can like this, unless you enjoy chewing on the end of a cigarette butt. This is just disgusting to me.

Bottle (341 ml). Light brown with a small off-white head. Aroma is smoked malt with slight malt/caramel. Taste is about the same. Moderately dry mouthfeel. Good balance but there’s not much else here. I’m not really a big fan of smoked beer though (except Fastenbier, which is exceptional).

11.2 oz bottle thanks to the legendary God of Montreal himself, Dany. Poured a clear nice looking rusty orange brown with a smaller tight almost creamy beige head. Aroma was smoked pork skins, ham, wet burnt down building the morning after. Thinner bodied with very subtle carbonation and a lingering smokey aftertaste. Flavor is a bit better then the aroma with more of a smoked meat flavor along with charred wood and brown toast. Not quite sure why I’m starting off the 2012 NFL season with a Canadian beer but hey this was a very nice beer so why the hell not.

Bottle thanks to Dmac. Pours out an odd ruby/brown color with a small light off white head. Aroma is of sweet and smoky BBQ’d meats, wood, and some light caramel. Taste is like a delicious liquid BBQ in your mouth, nice charred smoky notes, light sweetness, some caramel and earthy notes on there. Nice!

341mL thanks to JulienHuxley. Pours a clear amber with thick, yellow, dense foam. Excellent retention and lacing. Nose is very dense applewood smoked bacon, smoked gouda cheese, roasted barbecue, sharp cinnamon rub. Very intense. Savory pork rub. Taste is dense bacon fat, honey, spicy barbecue. Oh yeah. Delicious. One of the best rauchbiers I’ve had. Palate is light, clean, small lemon, loads of outdoor barbecue. Very impressed.

On tap at Festibière de Québec. Clear copper-amber with an okay white head. Smells like smoked meat. Tastes strangely salty. Like meat. And dry taffee. Smokey finish. Light bodied, somewhat watery. Good!

On tap at DDC. clear amber w/ minimal head but good early lacing. Aroma is molten BBQ sauce. As in, throw a Costco sized bottle of BBQ sauce in a pot, add a few drops of liquid smoke, bring to a light boil, then simmer for 23 minutes covered. Lift the lid with your face in the pot. You smell this beer. As long as there's more smoke-to-sweet aroma. Taste is all wet smoked wood with a very late medium dry finish.

Bottle 341 ml. Bought at Peluso (Montreal). First of all, I must admit that I am not a big fan of smoked beer, that explains my low rating. Pours light brown with redish reflect. Impresssive aroma of smoked malt (are there bacon aficionados?), but that’s pretty much all there is. Taste is lighter than aroma. Right on style, that’s the main quality of this beer.
