Nutmeg and Aniseed Red Ale. The Ciel Étoilé is a well balanced and refreshing beer with a strong aniseed flavour.

(hiver 2006-07)

On tap at DDC. Hazy dark amber with off-tan head. Nutmeg, anise, all spice, malt and grain. Very carbonated, slightly bitter, nutmeg, dry but just not my thing.

Draught at Dieu du Ciel brewpub. Pours a slightly hazy gold with an average size white head. Aroma: Whoa, you gotta like anise(!), it’s pretty much just that backed by sweet malt -- I’m not loving it, but if you love anise it’s well done. Flavour’s the same, too much anise for my liking but that’s a personal preference and not a knock on the beer.Well done (for some).

Draught - April 22, 2009 - at Dieu du Ciel. Slightly hazy amber-gold with an average off-white head. Aroma is a little bit of grain and a LOT of aniseed. Tasted a bit stronger than 5% - the was dryness I attributed to a hint of booziness - a weak light sweet malt backbone with tons of aniseed, a little spicy maybe. Sticky, lightly carbonated - but what the heck, they were aiming for a beer tasting like aniseed and they got it. "it’s o-KAY, but you sure as fuck better like aniseed!"

On tap at DDC. Appearance: golden brown, small white head, a little visible carbonation. Aroma: definite aniseed, nuts, liquouice and malt. Flavour: creamy aniseed, candy sugar, malt, grass and a good spiciness in the finish. Interesting brew!

1/18/08 notes: on tap DdC. Pours a hazy golden color, similar to wheat beers. Nose of heavy spices, wheat, and hops. Flavor filled with herbs, grain, rye and some sweetness. I felt that this intense use of spices was a bit overwhelming, but certainly not short on flavor or fullness. Very interesting overall, would try again . . . this is just a well done, spicy wheat beer.

Cloudy orange body topped by a long-lasting small creamy white head. Body is rather full and oily. Orange pulp flavour and ginger flavours upfront along with various herbal spices. Doughy malts/yeast. The advertised anise is there but more herbal spices flavours joinded in along the way. Hints of ginseng, coriander, nutgmeg and white not some white pepper. Interesting and different. I liked the Starry Night (Ciel Étoilé). I liked it almost as much a real starry night, when I lay in my bed looking at the beautiful stars thinking to myself, I really need to fix that roof.
