3.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
October 6, 2012; 6.5% abv, 341 mL bottle, lager glass
Aromas of citrus and pine hops are dominant. Formed head was a bit too pillowy to get a good scent. Pours a hazy honey head that is thick and frothy. Though it takes away from the aroma, this is a piece of art. Interesting malty notes - sweet and banana - like banana bread. A bit of sweet raisin in there as well. Surprisingly absent are the typical hop flavours. However, there is a resin finish that reminds me of the style. A bit thin, runny almost compared with the head. Nice light carbonation. Interesting take; very malt forward taste. This is a great beer with great character.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
A long-time favourite in Central Canada, Corne du Diable exemplifies the craftsmanship demonstrated by Dieu du Ciel on a regular basis. The look of a red ale, with a soft white head with strong lacing and staying power. The nose is led by a significant roasted malt base, enhanced by citrus hops and a touch of carmel. the taste profile is complex, leading with roasted malt, caramel and citrusy and piney hops. Touches of orange rind, dark berries and roasted almonds combine to tip this beer towards an east coast IPA style. The soft carbonation is appropriate for the style. Balance is maintained in the sustained taste, with the richer sweetness in the malt coming to the foreground.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
IPA from what is probably Canada’s most renowned brewery. Thick and frothy, yellowish egg-white, dense, creamily lacing head over an initially clear, coppery red amber coloured beer, notably darker and more red than is custom for the style, so it already distinguishes itself in its looks. Aroma has wonderful piney and citrussy hops as well as a good dosis of malts, the latter even becoming stronger than the hops as the beer warms up: grapefruit peel, cedar needles and even cedar wood, hemp, orange zest, roses, lime peel, biscuit, toasted bread, walnuts, pink peppercorns, fresh and pungent apple cake sweetness piercing through here and there, mango, touch of liquorice. Clean and crisp onset of dried fruits, mango, hints of pineapple and strawberry, fairly soft carbo with a deep sourish accent for balance, lime freshness, after which - as expected seeing the colour and inhaling the aroma - a rounded, soft but very ’present’ malt character follows, toasted and nutty with a caramelly edge but not turning really sweet anywhere. It knows where to stop: though it persists till deep into the finish, this maltiness is overcome by a powerful yet elegant, gracious hop bitterness in the finish, spicy, piney, grapefruity and in that sense very American. It never becomes overly harsh though, so the beer ends with a juicy ’bittersweetness’. Lovely and idiosyncratic IPA; I would not call this an English style IPA, the hop character is way too strong and ’American’ for that, but it does put more emphasis on the malts than usual in this (now) obiquitous style; I’d rather classify this as an American red IPA, with which it shares all of its main features. Whatever the variant may be, this is a juicy, appetizing, flawless and interestingly delicious ale, in which one can clearly feel the expertise of this brewery. I cannot get enough of their beers now.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 1/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle to pint glass. Looks like muddy water, very small head. Aroma is brown bread, cinnamon, nutmeg, slight yeast.
Taste is fruity, apricot, date. Also brown sugar and French toast. Yum. Slight vinegar like aftertaste, but not too bad. Carbonation is weak. Don’t know that I would classify this as an American Style IPA; seems closer to a Belgian, but lighter on the strong yeast. Very tasty though.

Vermelha escura, quase marrom, levemente turva. Espuma média de média duração. Aroma adocicado e cítrico. Sabor bem amargo, com notas de ameixa, caramelo, limão, grama verde e especiarias. Retrogosto adocicado com final amargo. Uma IPA extremamente complexa e saborosa!

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle @ Stout Irish Pub, Toronto. Pours hazy dark amber with airy but stable off-white head. Clear aroma of hops and needles, with fruity notes and touches of yeast. Bitter, hoppy flavour with notes of citrus amd touches of malt and fruit. Estery hints, especially in the rather bitter aftertaste. Decent, indeed
