Davinci (258), Chicago, Illinois, USA May 22, 2008 Golden yellow pour with large rocky white head thick like meringue. Bubbles are large soda bubbles. Very sticky large lacing. Hops really shine through at first, very herbal almost peppery nobel type hop aroma. Below that there is a nice subtle fruity ester and maybe a hint of citrus followed by a faint alcohol note. I am quite impressed with the complexity in the nose. Wow the taste does not dissapoint. This one really wakes up the palate. Spicey tart and sweet all seem to exist nearly simultaneously. A nice bitter, spicey, herbal hop note leads the charge, followed quickly by a pleasant citrus note coupled with a mild sweetness. The whole thing ends up rolling towards the hops toward the end. This is very big yet well balanced. I agree with marcbe in that the bitter and tart characteristics blend like Orval or even a Westy blonde. Well done to say the least and way under-rated in my opinion.
kmweaver (1973), Takoma Park, Maryland, USA Aug 29, 2008 12oz bottle, courtesy of ryan. Thanks! Pours a slightly hazy, golden color; bright white head with solid retention and fine-bubbled lacing. Solid amounts of honey, white pepper, and ginger in the aroma; nicely dry and peppery. Lively carbonation. Medium-to-full mouthfeel: lots of white pepper, honey, and vanilla upfront; very lively mouthfeel; touches of alcohol at the perimeter, but very slight; overall, very drinkable, lively, and slightly sweet. Lengthy finish: honey, white pepper, and toasted malts; reasonably dry and toasty throughout. ryan (1706), Beltsville, Maryland, USA Aug 28, 2008 Hazy pale body with a small white head. Big floral and herbal hop nose with light honey and dough. The flavor is just lightly sweet and moderately bitter with spicy herbal and floral hops, light cotton candy, hay and honey. Medium body is round with moderate carbonation. Finish is long with a lasting bitterness. arjoseph (540), Chicago, Illinois, USA Aug 26, 2008 12 oz. into pint; purchased at Discount Liquor. Pours with a huge fluffy LaChouffe-esque head, dissipates rockily. Smells yeasty, banana, some cardamom. Foamy feel, carbonation is just soft as all get-out (what does that phrase mean, anyway?). Some sticky lacing. Flavor is underwhelming, but unoffensive: some apricot in the beginning and finish, surrounded by pepper, tiny amount of banana, and maybe fruitcake. The finish is nicely dry, and the pepper comes out more. Still, kind of unimpressive. Not hard to drink, but not memorable at all. tomthompson89 (1119), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Aug 21, 2008 nice beer, bottle Cafe Volo. cloudy orange color, with little chunks at the bottom, nose was hopy but also , slightly soapy, with some nice belgian spices, flowers as well.flavor is yeasty but sweet, but well balanced peaches , and honey. some hops on the finish and a great Belgian ale is what we have, probably one of the best Belgian style ales in North America Geth_in_beer (667), Nova Scotia, Canada Aug 19, 2008 Bottle.
