Commercial Description:
Équinoxe du Printemps (French for "spring equinox") is the quintessential marriage of two great traditions: beer brewing in Scotland, and maple syrup production in Quebec. At the first draught, the mouth is overcome by woody, malty flavours, sustained by a discrete touch of sweetness. The aftertaste brings about the flavours of maple, which are sufficiently present to be appreciated, but never overwhelming the typical flavours of a Scotch Ale.

Equinoxe du printemps is brewed only once a year in January. It is aged for two months in order to attain a perfect balance in taste. Then, it is sold starting March 21st, until stocks last.

THOUGHTS: Wow. This was great. You could put this on pancakes. Can’t wait to have this during a snowstorm this winter. Just enough alcohol burn. It did get a little cloying, but with this it didn’t matter. And my bottle said 9.5% ABV not 8. TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured a dark brownish orange with reddish, orange highlights and an average, off-white head that mostly diminished and left fair lacing. The aroma was moderate to heavy molasses, caramel, and malt, brown sugar, mostly maple syrup, brandy and Canadian Club Whiskey. The initial flavor was sweet; while the finish was very sweet, slightly bitter with a hint of sourness. There was maple syrup, brandy, raisin, more malt, hints of chocolate syrup and caramel. The medium to full body was syrupy and sticky on the lips with lightly fizzy carbonation and a light astringent finish.

11.5 oz bottle. Pours a deep orange with a creamy light tan head. Aroma is very sweet, the malts are a little oxidized, some honey, the maple is barely coming through, very sweet again, caramel and toffee on the forefront. Some soft fruitiness. Flavor starts with some heavy sugary sweetness, some maple, banana, more caramel and toffee. Finishes still sweet but with a little alcohol. Medium to full body and a softer carbonation. I feel weird, the maple syrup almost has an adverse affect on the rest of the beer, making it really sweet, nearly cloying. Still I enjoy the rich malt characters

New Years Day: Hazy brown to deep amber hue with a frothy off-white head and okay lacing. The aroma has notes maple syrup, caramel, peat, barley, apricot, banana, clove and earthy esters. The taste is sweet and a tad fruity with a fair amount of barley and kilned malts. Mild spice and earthy finish, a tad medicial and peaty as well. The mouth feel is a bit sticky and chewy, moderate alcohol presence on the finish. Okay but honestly expected more.

Bottle. Pours a dark amber body with slight haze. Aroma is maple syrup and slight alcohol. Taste is sweet with some hints of alcohol. Great flavor, probably the best scotch ale.

A: Deep-amber/copper, light tan head, very little retention, no lacing. S: Maple is apparent, plenty of bubble gum fruit esters, sweet toffee & caramel. T: Maple syrup, toffee, caramel, fruity esters, light hopping & bitterness, hints of warming alcohol. M: Well-attenuated moderate body has an off-dry finish. D: A decent drinker for its strength.

Bottle at Chriso’s Kook Tasting 09. Thanks to Chris for this one. Hazy pale chestnut colour, lasting beige head. Sweet aroma. Way too sweet. Don’t like maples. Too sweet even for a mead head like me.

I got a licorice blast in both the nose and on the tongue. Nice mellow brownness and the 9,5 ABV is a bonus. It might be a good beer on a cold night with an elk roast, but not my cup of malt.

11.5oz bottle. murky, thick red-brown color underneath a fluffy off-white head. The aroma is sweet, with a touch of woody earthiness. The taste is quite maple syrupy sweet, with some mild soapy bitterness. Subtle dark fruit in the aftertaste. Almost a year old at this point if it only brewed in January, it has probably mellowed some carbonation wise,as it is a little soft. Quite complex, similar to a Wee Heavy or Doppelbock, but with that distinct Canadian Maple Syrup taste. A touch of smokiness in there as well. Quite unique, another great beer from DDC.
