COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Équinoxe du Printemps (French for "spring equinox") is the quintessential marriage of two great traditions: beer brewing in Scotland, and maple syrup production in Quebec. At the first draught, the mouth is overcome by woody, malty flavours, sustained by a discrete touch of sweetness. The aftertaste brings about the flavours of maple, which are sufficiently present to be appreciated, but never overwhelming the typical flavours of a Scotch Ale.

Equinoxe du printemps is brewed only once a year in January. It is aged for two months in order to attain a perfect balance in taste. Then, it is sold starting March 21st, until stocks last.

Bottle. Pours a brown amber with tan head. Decent lace. Banana, bready, caramel, creamy. Not bad.

(On tap at the DDC tap takeover @ barVolo, Aug 23 2014) Pours a hazy black tea colour with a small yellowish tan head and no lace. Aroma quite sweet and iced tea like when cold. Maple sugar sweetness and yellow raisins and prunes. On the palate, sweet maple sugar dominant at first, stewed dark fruits, on the finish it dries out with a moderate resin bitterness, faint nuts, more maple sugar, bit of alcohol heat. Body medium-full, slightly syrupy with moderate prickly carb, This was a pretty nice sipper, maple-forward and perhaps better suited to a cooler day or a later position in my tasting rotation away from the wits, sours and IPAs. Quality is there though, would like to try the barrel version as I can see it being ideal for that.

Pours a very dark blackish brown with 0 head. It almost looks like a very dark. There’s a decent amount of sediment in the bottom of the bottle. Aroma is sweet candied sugar, maple, and caramel. The taste is huge malty sweetness and alcohol, followed by an aftertaste of maple syrup. This is a big, thick, beer and I don’t think I could have more than 1 bottle.

Bottle. A: Dark mahogany worthy of Ron Burgundy. Off-white head. Good lacing. N: Smoke, toffee, caramel, maple syrup, some oxidation, charcoal, plenty of bready malts, and bubble gum. T: Smoke and big Scotch sweetness. M: Thick and sticky. Moderate carb levels are appropriate for the style and heft. O: Maple adds a nice element to this one. I always want to like the beer more than I do, however, especially as Peche Mortel is one of my favorite beers out there.

Wow this thing has all kinds of aromas. Vanilla, cherries, wood and the maple syrup shine beautifully. Pours a musty brown with little flakes of sediment. Taste tightly composed with more cherries, sweet malt, maple, toffee and leather. Not much in the way of the classic peat from a Scotch ale, but that is a good thing in my opinion. Wonderfully balanced and full flavored. Another great beer from this brewery.

Bottle. Pours a hazy brown with extremely rich red highlights and a smooth, lacy cream-cinnamon head. Nose is maple sugar candy, vanilla, toast, warm wood, earth, and mushrooms -- a real mingling of aromas. Dry and rich on the tongue, with the earthy mushroomy substantialness predominant; the maple echoes its way in towards the back of the mouth, not as sweetness but as more of an aromatic note, adding a subtle roundness to the roasty coffee and black tea elements. Finish is long, a little boozy, and silky, with that maple ghost continuing to hang around and tie the whole package together. Pretty darn amazing.

Aroma is malts, toffee, Scotch ale yeast and a hint of the maple syrup. The flavor is maple syrup, malts, fruit and a medium sweetness in the finish.

Pours a murky brown with a short tan head diminishing rapidly to nothing, no lacing. Nose is distinctly maple, dark fruits, and candy sugar, with a distinct alcohol edge. Taste is maple, brown sugar, and figs, with a distinct alcohol warming. Mouth feel is slick and heavy, with low carbonation. Not a big fan of Wee Heavies, but this one’s pretty good. The maple flavour works well, and though it’s one the heavy side, the sweetness isn’t cloying. The ABV’s not well hidden, though, giving the ale an abrasive edge that doesn’t unreservedly work.

Brown reddish pour at Prohibition Pig. Light tan head that disappears pretty quickly. Slight peaty and roasted malt nose. Really nice taste, complex with a subtle maple finish that intensifies and lingers.

Poured from a 355 cc bottle into a stem glass. Pours dark reddish brown with a tan head leaving generous lace. Aroma is dark dried fruit, brown sugar, caramel apple, maple syrup, and malts. Flavour is complex dark malts, scotch ale, subtle maple and molasses. Very well balanced. I was scared the maple syrup might be too dominating but this is not the case. Great combination.
