3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 MartinT (6934) - Montreal, Quebec, CANADA - OCT 22, 2005
The Lure: Minutious smoke lifts from the earth. Alt-like caramel maltiness joins pomegranate fruitiness. Subtle, well-made, not too threatening.
The Festivities: Smoking earth and caramel dew. Tiny, prickly bubbles pinch the palate through the fruity, peachy maltiness. Faint wooden dryness appears in the end. This is so approachable and well-made, it could replace their regular hemp ale, Fumisterie.
Transcendence: Applying the first colours on your painting.

Orange-amber pour mounted by a lacing white head. A spicy (mint) and fruity, bready nose, supremely clean and diplomatic. Herbal weeds remind of a shaken earthy flower field. Gentle spicy hopping keeps the focus on soft herbal character, procuring a gentle drying out finish. The smoke remains more of a hint than a possessing aspect. From most other brewpubs, we’d have called it too subtle, but DDC has a sense of balance that makes it all come through as a session smoked. Light-medium bodied, rather crisp malty body. Short finish appears kinda rye-ish (hemp I guess) and ponctuated with greatly exacted malty notes.

Fair smokiness over caramel malts in the nose with some light fruitiness also apparent. Brilliant, clear, reddish-copper coloured body is topped with a low but lasting, white head that leaves some lacing. Smokey malts are strong up front with a very dry back end that doesn’t seem to support it fully. Some herbal notes appear before a lingering sweetness in the finish. Medium body with lively carbonation. On tap at the brewpub with Olivier_MTL.

Pint at the brewpub in the company of Olivier_MTL and ClarkVV. Clear amber, smooth-creamy moderately lasting head...sedate smoky-herbal character in the nose, lightly sweet and malty with little hop presence, a bit floral...body is lightly sweet, creamy and luscious with hints of bitterness late, touch oily and the smokiness is very restrained throughout. Very much a session smoked, quite enjoyable but not really mindblowing as I’d hoped.

(1/2 pint) On draught at the brewpub on October 29, 2005. Pours a depp reddish-orange body with a thin, foamy white head. The nose if terribly smoked. It had a mixed flavour of smoked bacon, cookie and spice. Something about this beer disagreed with me from the start - it was OVERBOARD in every way. There was a diminished barrel flavour in the finish. I did not finish my pint and ordered a Nativité Blond to rinse my palate.

On draught at DdC, 11/5/05 with Muzzlehatch and Olivier. Clear, but with just a slight waviness to the liquid, as most DdC draught beers have. Amber-beige, with no visible carbonation and a neatly retained, off-white colored head. Aroma of light toffee, soft yeast and a bit raisins and light date notes. Don’t get much, if any, smoke from the nose at this point. The flavor, however, brings smoke right away. Full and flavorful, but not your salty, bacon fat sort of smoke. Rather, a dry wood smoke with some nutty hemp and light yeast hanging on the edges. Quite fruity, with a chewy raisin-toffee flavor in the background. As it warms, I do pick up some soft, sweet smoke in the aroma. In the flavor, the palate adjusts quickly to the smoke, and supported by a truly smooth, fluid texture, the beer goes down easily and flavorfully. Light tanginess from the smoke, on the fnish, after warming, along with some earthy notes and more sweet toffee lingering. No alcohol apparency, moderately acidic and a gentle carbonation. Yes, can you believe it, DdC has done a session smoked beer.

Clear orange amber pour with a thin white head. Mild aroma of smoked malt and hemp. Good flavor of smoked malt, hemp and caramel. The body is light with a dry texture and lively carbonation.

Ambebrown hue, with a white head, floral hops, caramel malt, shy smoked malt, aroma follows through on a medium-bodied smoked palate, flowery hops, here with hamp, with a nice smoked flavor coming in second, with a earthy smoked malt accent, leading towards a dry hoppy finish.
