The Grande Noirceur is an intensely black and dense beer with pronounced roasted flavours. The bitterness is very imposing but is balanced by a malty-caramel taste. The alcohol content is quite high, but its presence remains discrete in this beer.

ABV initially 8.5%, changed in late 2012 to 9%.

The Sampler, NYC tap: Pours black with a light tan head. Aroma is massive amounts of coffee and chocolate, roasted malts, caramel malts... like a high class Milky Way without the sweetness and instead a dirty bitterness bringing it all together. Nice hoppy flavors, but they are mellowed by the smooth body and incredible balance. This took me quite a while to finish, but it was enjoyable through and through.

Bottle from last night that I forgot to rate. Black. The aroma was intense roasted malt that was noticeable as soon as I opened the bottle. The taste added coffee and booze. medium mouthfeel. Excellent

Bottle from Yonkers, NY. One of the best pieces of label art from this beer. Haunting. Appearance of beer is black with some mild tan foam. Aroma is roast coffee. Taste is the same with some bakers chocolate in the mix. Very smooth and drinkable but not terribly exciting or moreish.

On tap at the beerbistro. Pours a near black, oily dark brown with big, lasting brown head. Aroma has an interesting amalgam of roasty coffee, dark fruit, molasses and anise. Flavour is more fruity than anticipated with dark fruits and berries, molasses, anise and understated roasty coffee character. Very fine, reasonably lively carbonation. Dangerously easy to drink. Wow!

Bottle. The look is black in color, dark, and tan in color. The smell is roasty, chocolate, powder, malts, and brownie. The taste malts, dusty, chocolate, alcohol, fruit, slight vinegar, and some sweetness.

March 21, 2014. On tap at beerbistro. Yet another Dieu du Ciel beer that I much prefer on tap. Very, very smooth beer. Coffee and chocolate on the nose. Very dark colour, with dark tan head, lovely lacing as I was drinking. Coffee and dark chocolate flavours, lovely silky mouthfeel. The bitterness I remember from drinking this on a previous occasion from a bottle is mostly gone when on tap. Very nice beer.

11.5oz thick bottle. Deep opaque black body. Thin beige head fades away after a few sips. Relatively muted and sublime chocolate aroma. Oily and rich, quite a massive mouthfeel. Big bitterness in addition to huge malt tones. Real deal Imperial Stout, quality. Oily blanket of specialty malt smoothness, reminiscent of some Scandinavian examples. Chocolate dominated but also some licorice, tobacco, leather come out at it warms. An excellent beer.

On tap at Monks Kettle. Pours jet black with an attractive tan head and a chocolate and treacle aroma. There is a rich chocolate, dark molasses and coffee flavor with a dry finish. Magnificent!
