The Grande Noirceur is an intensely black and dense beer with pronounced roasted flavours. The bitterness is very imposing but is balanced by a malty-caramel taste. The alcohol content is quite high, but its presence remains discrete in this beer.

ABV initially 8.5%, changed in late 2012 to 9%.

Bottle. Hearty near-black pour, medium brown finely bubbled head. Rich brothy roasty body, burnt beans, sweet booziness. Warm alcohol deep into the finish remains unobtrusive, but demands that you approach this with patience. I liked it-- kind of a stripped-down RIS if that makes any sense.

Bottle: Thanks Gothgargoyle: Served in a Chouffe glass: Brown black pour. Medium sized creamy brown foamy head, changes slowly, on top of a pitch black colored beer. Aromas of roasted malts, roasted hay, dried leaves, coffee, some espresso, some coffee roast, roasted pils malt, some liquorice and some hop toast. Flavours of bitters, malt roast, coffe roast, coffee tones, light (malty) dry, some cream, some chocolate/cacoa, hay roast, dried leave toast, light hint of liquorice and a sprinkle of something liquorice spicy. Balanced: bitter, roast and the rest. Aftertaste has roast, bitter, malt roast, light dry, some cacoa and light coffee ish tones. Low carbo, soft creamy close to silky mouthfeel, full body and a creamy texture.

Dark onyx pour with a small tightly packed latte head. Cocoa, roasted oats, toasted malt, and caramel. Surprisingly, the alcohol is incredibly noticeable and a bit distracting. Would think that it was much higher than it is...disappointing.

Loved this stout. Very dark colour as you'd expect. Sweet rum like aroma. Tastes is is full of dark chocolate, with hints of smokiness coming through. Nice lingering taste with balanced bitterness. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pour is pitch black with nice brown head and good lacing. Aroma of roasted malts, coffee, grassy hops, chocolate. Taste is roasted malts, grassy hops are fairly present here, coffee, chocolate, caramel, light bitter finish. Full body and moderate carb. Pretty good stout.

Dark brown to black, lots of espresso on the nose. Lots of roast and more than I expected. cold pressed coffee is persistent and the booziness is pretty big. it drinks like a 12% stout which isn’t really a good thing.

12 oz. bottle. Nose is chocolate, coffee and hint of smoke. Flavor is mostly the same yet the mouthfeel is larger then the ABV suggests. Alcohol burns on the way down with an a lingering touch on the tongue. Flavor is good just a bit more boozy then I want. Still a nice drink.

Tap at BarHop. Deep black pour with a fast fading tan head. The aroma is lovely. Very big and roasty with a lot of dry chocolate character and a little bit of salted/savory malt. Intensely salty and rich with a heavy roasted component. It’s intense - but it’s not really the type of Impy Stout that gets me going.
