COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The Grande Noirceur is an intensely black and dense beer with pronounced roasted flavours. The bitterness is very imposing but is balanced by a malty-caramel taste. The alcohol content is quite high, but its presence remains discrete in this beer.

ABV initially 8.5%, changed in late 2012 to 9%.

Thanks to Tommy for this one. Aroma is burnt toast, light chocolate, mild dark fruits. Taste is a bit bland up front and then ramps up to heavy ashy bitterness and light chocolate. Interesting stout and pretty nice.

341 mL bottle at BeerBistro, served in a snifter. Pours deep black with a medium creamy, frothy tan head that fades to a thin remnant and leaves a small amount of lace. The nose has deep roasted malts, coffee and dark chocolate; herbal hops become more prominent as it warms. The flavour is medium dry with big roasted malts, a hint of smoke and a big herbal component. It is fairly hoppy throughout with herbal hops. Big dark espresso, chocolate and a peppery alcoholic note are present throughout. It dries out even further towards the end, and closes out with big roasted malts and a huge bitterness, some herbs and pepper. On the palate, it is full in body with a dry texture and soft carbonation. Overall, this is a nice imperial stout, interesting for its dryness and roastiness. It carries the coffee well, but is perhaps a tad too dry for my taste. The bitterness was nice, almost like a black imperial IPA. Compared to Péché, it is considerably drier and more roasty, but the coffee is not as big. 2013-02-12

Bottle from Bar Hop. Black with a thin brown head. Aroma of coffee, cinnamon, and dark fruits. Taste is extremely dry roasty with cinnamon, and a little vanilla/bourbon. Body feels thin. Pretty nice, but not super great by Imperial Stout standards.

Bouteille 750ml (vieillie 1 an) dégustée sur place. (printemps 2006)

On tap, O’Connors, Uppsala, Swe. Aroma really heavy with toffee, not much room for other aromas. Taste: very sweet, lots of toffee, aftertaste a bit burnt.

UPDATED: JAN 27, 2013 Bouteille 341 ml. 8.5%. Noire comme la nuit, mousse brune. Arôme de café torréfié noir, houblon..un peu de choco. En bouche, beaucoup de torréfaction, malt, houblon. Finale amère, balancée par le malt, un peu de sucre. Excellente Imperial Stout.

Bottled sample via BreWedge, shared wtih oakbluff. Near black in colour with medium carbonation. Aromas are of milk chocolate, earthy coffee, and caramel. Flavors are of sharp and roasty (but not astringent) coffee bean, vanilla caramel, and dark chocolate. Lighter bodied for the style, but very drinkable. More of a sessionable take on the style, but still very tasty.
