The Grande Noirceur is an intensely black and dense beer with pronounced roasted flavours. The bitterness is very imposing but is balanced by a malty-caramel taste. The alcohol content is quite high, but its presence remains discrete in this beer.

ABV initially 8.5%, changed in late 2012 to 9%.

Bottle. Pours an oily, stouty brownish-black, opaque with a thin espresso colored head with little in the way of retention. Nose is heavy on the roast, touch of smoke, some cocoa, slight diacetyl noticeable. Mouth is slick and oily, full of roasted barley, mild sweetness gets a bit overshadowed buy a sooty bitterness, underlying hints of cocoa, vanilla and French roast coffee, dries out towards the finish and followed by a bit of the ABV warmth. Looking at the composite score and some of these reviews, I’m curious to whether perhaps I got an old or bad bottle... because otherwise my feelings about this beer can be summed up in one word: Underwhelmed.

Appearance: unrelieved opaque black, one finger of creamy light beige head, moderate retention and lacing. (4/5) Aroma: dark roasty malt, coffee and bitter chocolate, lightly ashy. (8/10) Taste: moderate sweet, moderate bitter. (8/10) Palate: medium-full body, moderate-low carbonation, dry mildly bitter finish. (4/5) Quite dry for the style, with low sweetness. Surprisingly non-existent alcohol presence given the moderately high ABV. One of my big problems with Imperial Stouts is the tendency to very high sweetness, making them syrupy and cloying, but this thing is very well-behaved. (16/20)

Bottle. Wood, dark chocolate, raisin, toasted barley malt, and ash aroma. Opaque black with small head. Sweet earthy/smoky wood, prune, chocolate malt, and moderately bitter herbal/ashy flavor. Nice body. Great flavor.

Dark black, no head. Tasted after Peche Mortel and Peche Mortel Bourbon BA. This is way different. Not as thick. Considerably way more smokey. Hoppy bitterness.

341ml bottle. Jet black colour with late awakening, small to average, thick, creamy, fairly lasting and lacing, tan head. Chocolately, dark malty aroma, notes of dark and milk chocolate, vanilla, a touch of rum and treacle, minimally ashy and smoky, roasty overtones gain upper hand while the beer’s warming up, some liquorice comes in. Taste is roasty and chocolately dark malty, caramel notes, hints of Chinese fortune cookie, treacle, vanilla, the roast comes along in slightly ashy, smoky and even tart-ish fashion, additional notes of liquorice; oily texture, soft and minimally sticky palate. Quite strong and forceful but not really heavy, superb balance of caramel and chocolate gravity and ashy, roasty repulsion. In my personal order of succession their ’Péché Mortel’ ranks behind.

Excellent.
