COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The Grande Noirceur is an intensely black and dense beer with pronounced roasted flavours. The bitterness is very imposing but is balanced by a malty-caramel taste. The alcohol content is quite high, but its presence remains discrete in this beer.

ABV initially 8.5%, changed in late 2012 to 9%.

Bottled sample via BreWedge, shared wtih oakbluff. Near black in colour with medium carbonation. Aromas are of milk chocolate, earthy coffee, and caramel. Flavors are of sharp and roasty (but not astringent) coffee bean, vanilla caramel, and dark chocolate. Lighter bodied for the style, but very drinkable. More of a sessionable take on the style, but still very tasty.

Bottle at home it’s been years since I had a Dieu du Ciel rate. Ink black pour. Nose is caramel and molasses. Tastes of molasses, caramel, espresso, ink, And soy sauce. Rich bodied and thick, not particularly sweet which always appreciated with this style.

Visual: Pours pitch black with virtually not head, fine ringed retention, a few micro bubbles popping sporadically at the surface.

Nose: marshmallow, vanilla, mocha - all subtle. (lvl-4)-pungency

Attack: slick-thick, soft crisp, oily

Mid-palate: long (lvl-7)-sweetness, tangy alcohol detection, milky CO2, thick caramel barley malt, vanilla

Finish: woody bitter roast, lingering bitter hops with roasted coffee

Summary: It goes down very smooth and it’s gone with each sip before you know it. The vanilla-roasted coffee flavours are the ’like’-factors in this one. Recommended for imp stout lovers. I wished for more spice/vanilla in the mids to push it to an A-rating.

bottle @ Keg Liquors / Clarksville IN --- Aroma of malt, burlap, and light caramel chocolate. Opaque black with a rocky brown head that remains until the end, lace cobwebs. Taste is strong roasted malt and burlap with light fizz, moving to dark chocolate and light bittering in a long finish. Big, earthy, lots of roasted malt. And the description is incorrect - there is definite alcohol at the end.
