3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottled sample via BreWedge, shared wtih oakbluff. Near black in colour with medium carbonation. Aromas are of milk chocolate, earthy coffee, and caramel. Flavors are of sharp and roasty (but not astringent) coffee bean, vanilla caramel, and dark chocolate. Lighter bodied for the style, but very drinkable. More of a sessionable take on the style, but still very tasty.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle to snifter. Nose is big black roasted malts and dark chocolate coffee but stops short of being burnt. Black pour with small brown head. Some light tobacco and molasses as it warms. Taste is super roasted with a full silky mouthfeel. So much roast it seems acrid and sharp. After a few sips it becomes way more palatable and the alcohol comes out a bit. Silky mouthfeel but the roast, alcohol, and body never seem to truly come together in harmony. Maybe with some age this would come together to be better. Still a solid beer.

Velvety smooth!! Beautiful black pour w/ a mocha head & some lacing. The aroma is black liquorice & booze. Taste is light roast, chocolate, & toffee as it’s quite complex! The mouthfeel is what really sets this beer apart tho! So light & smooth for the abv! Deliciousness!!

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
I tend to avoid imperial stouts in hot weather. So the minute this week long Toronto heat wave broke & the humidity disappeared like Stephen Harper’s integrity & the themometer dipped to 21 degrees, I ran the the fridge & grabbed this beauty. Gifted from Hippyhop -- thanks man! Pours Keystone Pipeline oil spill black with a skinny finger of mocha foam as a cap. Nose is coffee shop. Taste is beautiful: dark roasted cup of cofee with a semi-sweet bar of chocolate melted in it. Not in your face & that’s probably why I love it so. This is sipping heaven.

4.6 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Pours black with a small tan / light brown head. Aroma is very roasted, some bittersweet chocolate and chalky, coal-like notes. Flavour is heavily roasted, with loads of chocolate malt, some wood, oats, but the chocolate and roast dominate this one. Very robust and uncompromising, without being brutal in any way. Excellent stuff.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
2013? bottle of Grande Noirceur with 9% ABV listed.
Essentially black colored body with a semi-durable tan head and decent lacing.
Aroma: slightly sweet, medium and dark malts with hints of smoke and dark chocolate. Milder than expected, especially after tasting it.
The flavor is dominated by dark roasted grains with a bit of char and smoke. Appropriately bold for style with partially hidden alcohol.
O: relatively dark-roasted version of the style that’s certainly worth a try.

(bottle - 330 ml) Pitch black pour with a creamy tan head. Light coffee and lots of caramel in the aroma. Some hints of cream and chocolate. Roasted coffee flavor at the start with a rather bitter middle and a heavily bitter and roasted finish. Some light hints of the chocolate at the end.

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
From a bottle into snifter. Black with large light brown head. Nose is chocolate, light coffee notes, some dark dried fruits, plums, raisins. Medium body, very soft carbonation, medium to high bitterness, medium sweetness. Long dark chocolate bitter finish, hints of dried fruits. Not bad.

4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
12 ounce bottle - nose is molasses. Sip adds black licorice and coffee. Reminds me of the stale licorice candy from my grandmother’s treat jar. Bitter chocolate aftertaste.

4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Bottle shared by the flaming Chudwick. Aroma is sweet molasses, roasted malts, and dark chocolate. Some notes of vanilla and brown sugar come through but faint. Flavor is bitter dark chocolate and brings out a little roasted coffee and black licorice.
