The Grande Noirceur is an intensely black and dense beer with pronounced roasted flavours. The bitterness is very imposing but is balanced by a malty-caramel taste. The alcohol content is quite high, but its presence remains discrete in this beer.

ABV initially 8.5%, changed in late 2012 to 9%.

341ml bottle from Broue Ha Ha. Black body, small chocolate head with average retention. Aroma of roasted malt, licorice, leather, chocolate liquor, prunes. Taste of burned sugar, burned toast, blackcurrant jam, coffee, noticeable hoppy aftertaste. Good warming effect. A very well done stout.

Bottle. Sharp dark roasted maltiness, tobacco smoke, so dark and bitter it feels like coal, long bitter finish. Too roasted for me, quite overpowering even though the alcohol is not so present.

Pours a two-finger light tan head that fades quickly leaving some lace. Black color, no highlights. Medium carbonation and medium bodied. Roasted coffee nose and flavor is roasted/burnt coffee, hoping for the caramel notes for balance but didn’t find them, lingering burnt coffee aftertaste. $5.99 for a 340ml bottle from Julio’s Liquors Westborough, MA.

Bouteille de 341ml. Se verse comme de la crème! Superbe couleur opaque. Mousse voluptueuse et persistante. En bouche, c’est pas très subtil. L’attaque est très puissante et torréfiée. La finale en subit les conséquences. Un peu âpre.

Bottle from Julios. Black with dark brown ring and some lace. Boozy burnt caramel toast aroma with a touch of fruit and dark chocolate. Very roasted boozy caramel dark chocolate espresso and dark fruity sweetness with very roasted woody boozy finish and a hint of grape cough syrup. Full body. Oily body. Very good.

11.5 ounce bottle poured into a brandy snifter. The beer is a dark brown with a khaki colored head of foam. Thin head, and it dissipates quickly. Decent lacing. The aroma reminds me of cocoa powder. Chocolaty and sweet. The taste lends more of a roasty bitterness, but overall, the sweetness still is the predominant characteristic. There is a touch of something a little ashy in here. Maybe the alcohol is coming through in that way. I get a bit of raisin the more I sip. Bigger body. Thick, chewy mouthfeel. Soft carbonation with lots of very tiny bubbles. All things considered, this beer is pretty damn good. I would love to have it again sometime.

Strong chocolate and roasted malt flavored with some smokiness. Pours black with a tan head. Aroma of chocolate and smoke. Finishes really bitter and chocolatey. Had out of a bottle at home.

Bottle to snifter. Nose is big black roasted malts and dark chocolate coffee but stops short of being burnt. Black pour with small brown head. Some light tobacco and molasses as it warms. Taste is super roasted with a full silky mouthfeel. So much roast it seems acrid and sharp. After a few sips it becomes way more palatable and the alcohol comes out a bit. Silky mouthfeel but the roast, alcohol, and body never seem to truly come together in harmony. Maybe with some age this would come together to be better. Still a solid beer.

Velvety smooth!! Beautiful black pour w/ a mocha head & some lacing. The aroma is black liquorice & booze. Taste is light roast, chocolate, & toffee as it’s quite complex! The mouthfeel is what really sets this beer apart tho! So light & smooth for the abv! Deliciousness!!
