3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 neuromatt (858) - Toronto, Ontario, CANADA - FEB 5, 2011
On tap at the Dieu du Ciel brewpub in Montréal, served in a tulip. Pours deep reddish black with a moderate, dense tan head. The head remains, leaving a moderate amount of dense lace. The nose has fresh piney hops, lots of herbs, some spice and a hint of alcohol. It has saison elements combined with sweet roasty chocolate notes. The taste is of fresh sweetish chocolate malts balanced with bitter piney hops and a saison-like spiciness. There is a good dose of pepper throughout. The finish is long and similarly peppery-spicy. On the palate, it is full in body with a smooth, creamy texture and average carbonation. Overall, this is a really cool beer that combines elements of a saison and an imperial stout. The saison-like elements really start to come through as it warms. Yet another interesting and delicious beer from Dieu du Ciel! 2011-02-02

dark brown color. Basically a Belgian black ipa. Lots of funky moderate bitterness. Well balanced. Earthy peppery finish. Extremely well executed. Wonderful.

On tap at the brewpub before ingloofest with brend and sacks. Pours very dark with an off whote head. Awesome ripe hop, sugar, malty flare. Nicely carbonated. Chocolately aroma, some espresso.

Draft, talk about extreme brewing this is crazy. Pours a black body with a tan head and good head retention, resembles a ris. Roast y and a bit boozy with a light chocolate sweetness. Herbal notes that go past the roast y tones, hints of fruit with a solid drying and a nice warmth. Fan.
2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20 DeanF (1542) - Iqaluit, Nunavut, CANADA - DEC 12, 2010
Aroma is chocolate mixed with hops. Has a black body with a dark brown head like chocolate mousse. Flavour is spicy barley, with some roasted chocolate. Very alcoholic finish that drowns out the sweet flavours quickly. It’s an okay attempt at something interesting but rather unbalanced.

On tap at the Blind Tiger. Pours a clear cola and ruby highlighted brown with a thin tan head. Roast, tons of it. Cool and subtle caramel. Lots of roast in the body, slight medicinal sweetness. Light Belgian esters and phenols. Lovely. Huge roast on the finish. Very nice.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20 TeamTrappist (817) - jericho, New York, USA - DEC 1, 2010
Tap at Blind Tiger. Nose is yeasty with roasted malts. Kind of an odd./interesting mix. Lots of roasted malts and coffee chocolate notes. Extremely bitter yet has a overlying sweetness. A bit thin and somehow it stays on the lighter side of things.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 bp (720) - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA - NOV 23, 2010
Draft: described as an imperial dark saison at the brewery, poured dark black with a tan head, malty aroma, roasted malt and coffee taste, medium bodied. Probably my favorite draft out of the six I had at Dieu du Ciel.
3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 manuchampions (1217) - Vancouver, British Columbia, CANADA - NOV 18, 2010
Sample at brewpub. Poured a dark blackish brown with particulate settling out under a dense mocha head. Huge roasted notes in the nose, the kind of thing that immediately suggests black IPA rather than black saison. Somewhat imperial stout all things considered. Taste is earthy, woody, almost tobacco-like in finish that gives it some distinction. Reminded me in style of an American strong due to the almost utter subversion of the saison characteristics. Regardless, very good.
