4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 JanLaursen (2160) - Copenhagen, DENMARK - MAY 14, 2012
Draught at CBC. Pours a creamy black with a small beige head. Aroma is complex - roasted and vineous, licorice, spices (especially notes of cinnamon), flowery hops, grapefruits. Flavor is massive - roasted, malty sweetness with notes of fruits and licorice leading to a heavy bitter dry finish. Quite hoppy. Big and bold. Alcohol is present, yet a very sophisticated brew. Maybe the best offering at CBC on friday - this was the one I had to try twice.
4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 laiti (3939) - Tampere, FINLAND - MAY 12, 2012
Draught @ CBC ’12. Rated on 11.05.2012
Aroma is rather light with earthy notes, some hints of roastiness and yeast. Also some dark chocolate later on. Smooth palate. Flavour is roasted with coffee, semi‐dark chocolate and some earthy notes. Leathery palate, especially on the finish. Malty feeling here. Unique stuff with farmhouse saison aroma and imperial stout taste.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 maekchu (1093) - Hirakata, JAPAN - MAY 11, 2012
Bottle from Asahiya. Coffee, strong alcohol, yeast in the nose. Dark brown color, a bit translucent at the edges, thin tan head. Dark bready porter-like flavors, with some chocolate, yeastiness, and a biting bitter saison note in the aftertaste. Warming alcohol, medium-full body. A very unusual hybrid beer. A heavyweight saison with roasted malt. Seems like a philosopher’s drink: contemplating the darkness and bitterness... and enjoying the process.
3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 glennmastrange (1888) - hobe sound, Florida, USA - JAN 18, 2012
UPDATED: MAR 1, 2012 Tap. Moderate toasted grain for the malt, light herbs for the hops, moderate to heavy musty and barnyard funkiness for the yeast, with port wine, prune and other over ripe fruit in the background. Head is large, creamy, light gray/brown with fair lacing and is mostly diminishing. Color is very dark brown. Flavor starts moderately sweet and lightly acidic, then finishes moderately acidic and heavily bitter. Palate is on the fuller side of medium, oily with a lively carbonation and a very dry finish. The balance between sweet and sour in this Dark Saison is nothing short of harmonious.
4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 Marheb (1179) - Montréal, Quebec, CANADA - JAN 18, 2012
