This "Imperial Dark Saison" is a collaboration between DDC and Shiga Kogen. It has the grain bill of an Imperial Stout, hops grown at Shiga Kogen and is fermented with Saison yeast.

341 ml bottle shared two ways. Pours a dark dark black with a fairly small dense tan head. Nose has lots of burnt malts and some yeasty notes. Taste is fairly sweet, with a lot of roast, some light ash and a tad vanilla. Pretty good but much more like a stout than a Belgian ale.

11.5oz bottle into Le Listermann - sip came from the head that was about to spill over; that sip was coffee, roast and almost burnt. Nose has hints of lactose. Second offers a "vague à propos of nothing" to quote some guy from TV. Smoother than the usual impy stout.

Apparence: D’une couleur café opaque, elle est coiffée d’une généreuse mousse d’une bonne durée. Arômes: Au nez, ce sont des notes d’épices et de fraîcheur. Saveurs: C’est le malt rôti qui vient complètement envelopper la bouche avec une touche de chocolat noir et d’alcool pure. Une légère effervescence sur la langue et une finale un peu houblonnée. On tap at Dieu du Ciel, 04/05/2014. Pours dark black, creamy light tan head on the surface, dense lacing built up around the edge of the glass. Aroma is dark fruit and yeast, touch of caramel with earthy, dusty roast, tobacco, forest floor. Taste is dark fruit, berries, cherries, subtle tartness and funk, chocolate and dark roast, touch of coffee, lingering bitterness. Heavy body, yet round, drinks easy. Really liked this one.

Pours a real dark colour with barely red highlights. Big frothy light-brown head with great retention and some sticky-sloppy lace. Aromas of roasted malts, but balanced by caramel malts and notes of fruits and hints of vanilla. The taste starts off hoppy with some grassy hops and finished with the roasted malts that give out some coffee. Some chocolate in there. Imperial Dark Saison... a nice style !

Black pour with a light beige head. Aromas of roasted malts, subtle dark fruit, and yeast. Flavor is not quite as roasty as an imperial stout but very roasty. Notes of plum and brown sugar as well. Finish is just slightly funky from the yeast. Tasty. Another solid brew from Dieu du Ciel.

Black color with small creamy head. The aroma is at first fruity, then perfumy; there is a mix of citrus fruits and nail polish; some roasted malt in the background. The mouthfeel is smooth, but also rather dry; it has an evident roasted malt character with coffee and ashes accent; the light residual sweetness is pleasant; the dark malts bring some acidity; traces of liquorice and cardboard, and of fruity hops; correct bitterness; ends with warming alcohol.
Layered beer, with the layers interchanging rapidly.

Decent beer. A little muddled, but interesting and complex. Aroma was heavy on the Belgian yeast with roasted malt and chocolate. Pour was a deep dark brown with a one finger light tan head. Taste had a lot going on. Very imperial stout like at first sip. Strong chocolate and roasted malt with hints of coffee. Mid sip and through to the finish, the strong Belgian yeast washed everything away. Every sip was a progression between the two flavors. Nice hard face slapping carbonation.

Bottle. Pours a clear dark brown body under a one inch frothy light brown head that had excellent retention. The nose is rather Stout-like with some roasted malt and dark chocolate, but with a fairly heavy yeast influence. It’s slightly fruity and earthy with some light coffee. The flavor is interesting I guess, it almost comes off as a slightly infected homebrew Imperial Stout. Plenty of roast, some slight licorice, a slightly sour twang on the finish. Some noticeable alcohol warmth on the back end. Lighter bodied than expected with lots of fizzy prickly carbonation and a lingering roasty finish. Interesting beer, but not something I’d drink with regularity.

11.5oz bottle, from Party Source. Shared with friends. Code on bottle reads 0-2 (???). Black color. Thin light brown head, with good retention. Couple loose bits of lace. Some roast, tobacco, dark fruit aroma. Up front it strikes me as last than fresh, maybe oxidized. Get some metallic, big astringency. Very spicy. Hard to take more than a sip of. Some dark chocolate, cocoa nib, that part is nice. Spicy bite in the finish. Moderate sweet taste, moderate bitte. Decent, interesting stuff. Gets much better as it sits, and the soft carbonation has a chance to mellow it out. Still, a bit too spicy for my taste, though. Maybe I would have enjoyed this more without the saison yeast, as an straight up imperial stout... The malt bill is very enjoyable. Kind of makes me crave a peche mortel
