3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 jonno (2013) - JAPAN - DEC 23, 2011
Signature SK on the nose, with some faint spices and a light hoppiness wafting from the embers. Odd mix of styles like an imperial stout crossed with a saison with chocolate and dark fruit being brightened by the character of the saison yeast. Very fruity finish and slightly sour granny apples. Quite warm, but the alcohol is pretty in check for 9.5% (listed on the bottle). Another winner from these two. Just read the commercial description - definitely Impy stout ish. Gets a bit peppery as it warms. A bit too fruity for me though.

Hops are very present in the aroma, as well as the saison yeast. Dark but clear. Taste is quite unique... never had anything like this before... partly imperial stout, partly saison... almost like a belgian black IPA. Slight fruitiness, but very dry aftertaste. An excellent fusion of styles. Mouthfeel and carbonation resemble a saison more than anything else. Quite enjoyable because of it’s originality.

(Taster glass at DDC) Dark ale with a small brown cap. Black malt perfume along with burnt pastis notes, chocolate, caramel and citrusy hops. Flavors are really good : I like the mix between bitter roasted malts, fresh liquorice roots and bitter hops. Mouthfeel is just nice. The body is well structured. Carbonation is on the moderate side. The texture is oily. At the end, long bitter notes with a spicy twist. I would love to find this beer on shelves.

Hmm. A dark imperial saison. I think that’s a new one on me, but it gets across the idea of what they are trying to accomplish. Nose has plenty of chocolate, roast and biscuit along with a strong lightly sour fruitiness. Opaque darkest brown body is topped by a finger of brown head that leaves some patchy lacing. Very sweet upfront with roasty and fruity character emerging. Nutty and fruity notes especially in the aftertaste alcohol is occasionally notable but in no way detrimental. There’s also a note of green apple and cookie dough in the finish. Dry medium body with decent carbonation. Quite a nice balance and a very drinkable dark sweet Belgian strong ale, but for me there’s not a lot that suggests saison. Some alcohol warming. A very cool experiment that has produced a very drinkable beer. Sampled on tap at the brewpub.

On tap at Dieu du ciel. The colr is dark brown with a dark beige head. The aroma is of roasted malt and dark chocolat. The taste also of roasted malt , ripe berry fruits, and some kind of spice and the bitter of dark chocolat. The 9% alcohol is noticeable but not enough to take away from the taste. I want more of this one.

Draft. Dark pour with tan head. Light funk and darker malt and roasted aroma. Roast and chocolate malt flavors resemble a stout but has fruit, spice and yeast tones resembling a saison. Different.

Deep brown pour with a tight tan head. The aroma is spicy and slighty tarry. A little bit of light spice and a kiss of roast. Fairly light yeast contribution. It’s fairly peppery on the finish. Not a lot of fruit or sweetness. Appropriately dry and fresh tasting. Slightly herbal, especially as it warms up. Pretty nice for the style - lingering charry finish.

Thanks to Kristina for this and Alex for tracking it down on BA...Darkish brown pour, but a little watery as its semi clear. A light tan head leaves a nice cap, ok lacing...Charred spice aroma, pretty interesting...The taste is nice, not sure how its a saison though with no hop presence. Dark fruits with spice, and a chocolate finish.
Interesting and worth trying.
