Commercial Description:
Black IPA. Again, an american invention. This style was born at the "Vermont pub and brewery" around 1997. It could be said that this beer tries to be an hybrid between a regular IPA and a porter. The Pénombre presents a light body and well expressed tofferaction tastes. The whole is however dominated by an evident bitterness, which stays always in balance with the other tates found in the beer. In the after taste, the bitterness and hops flavours are growing slowly dut surely, sip after sip.

My Bottom Line:
Plentiful roasted coffee beans lather the hop forest in this silky and voluptuous Black IPA, ending in a resinous hop bitterness which seems to carry a blurb of absinth-like sweet herb concentrate.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A veil of foam tops the burgundy-laced darkness.
-This hop forest is more and more intriguing as moves towards the finish of the sip: its leafy, earthy, humid, and sometimes peppery.
-The nose does not predict as many hops as there are in the flavor profile and finish.
-This is a fun pint like many others at DDC, drinkable, electic, and full-bodied.

On tap at the brewpub.

A deep clear brown ale with mahogany hues and a thin dark moka head. A nice floral hops in aroma with citrus notes, and nuttyness. In mouth, like a rich rich nutty IPA, with light chocolate notes. If this was a blind tasting, I would have thought this was a regular IPA. On tap at brewpub June 14, 2008.

Tap @ Mondial 2008. Aroma of chocolate, coffee, some hops too, deep brown, long lasting toffee head. West coast hops, fine roasted malt backing, medium bodied, extra well balanced, way too easy to drink. Especially good!

2008-05-30. Very dark brown body, modest creamy tan head and attempt at lacing on the glass. Aroma is mild, dry roasty malt, brief note of wet dog that may be imagined or mis-processed. Minute allusions to coffee-mocha. Interestingly roasty malt throughout the flavour, dry moderate roasty bitterness. Not a lot of hops really, but they grow quietly in the background as you drink, eventually adding some pleasant but muted resin and citrus touches to the lingering dry roast in the finish. (7+) Average plus palate. Pretty interesting. Draft, Dieu Du Ciel, Montreal
