elihapa (308), Connecticut, USA Oct 3, 2008 on tap, DDC. Pours a dark brown with ruby undertones. Aroma of citrus, and hops, surprisingly IPA-like given the color. Flavor can be characterized as “bitter fruitiness.” I would compare it to a more citrusy ESB. Overall, I though this brew was seriously flavorful, with a delicious bitterness. Some may consider Penombre a bit too stylistically confused, but I think this is simply innovative. Nice. rederic (1444), montréal, Quebec, Canada Oct 3, 2008 Dark brown color, with a creamy tan-colored head, leaving laces, mild roasty, toasty nose, with some nice black chocolate accents, with a spicy licorice note, in floral hop citrusy aroma follows through on a medium-bodied palate with a rich roasted malt, light toffeeness character, with a dark bitter choccolatey note, and some burnt toast, roasted coffee bean, espresso accents, with a faint licorice spiciness, and a light flowery hop citrusy bitterness, leading towards a roasty, leafy hop bittering finish. puzzl (1818), New York, New York, USA Sep 21, 2008 Tap at the DDC 10th Anniversary Party. Best beer of the night I’d say. Beautiful black with a very creamy head. Great roast and pumpernickel aroma. Fleating hops in the flavor behind a very grainy, espresso, dark malt flavor. More pumpernickel here. Quite nice. LadySusan (374), Ste-Therese, Quebec, Canada Aug 13, 2008 On tap at Dieu du ciel. The color is a dark brown with a thick dark beige head. The taste is grainy and bitter, a mix of hops and malt , also added to this is a taste of roasted coffee. This is an I.P.A. mixed with a strong ale as only Dieu du ciel can do. mabel (1662), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Aug 8, 2008 [1412-20080530] Tap. French vanilla milled soap aroma has a bit of toasted malt. Clear, dark brown red body with a medium-lasting creamy light tan head and thick lacing. More French vanilla and faint wood in the flavour with a bitter background. Medium-full body is mildly boozy. Nice, unexpected notables.
