porterhouse (1148), Alna, Maine, USA Jul 25, 2009 (11.5 oz. bottle from 1828 Vintage House, cellared for 1 yr. after purchase) Pours very dark brown, appears opaque. Half a finger of biege head recedes to a thin lasting layer. Nice looking beer. Aroma of coffee and some cherry/plum. Mouthfeel is fairly smooth, perhaps lightly oily. Sturdy mouthfeel for an Imp Stout. Light sheets of lacing melt away quickly along with a light syrupy film. Dominant flavor of rich roasted coffee with more hidden notes of dark baker’s chocolate, molasses, caramel, wood and cherry. ABV well-integrated. A nice smooth-drinking Imp Stout with perhaps a bit less complexity than some. luv2brew (177), Chesterfield, Virginia, USA Jul 24, 2009 Pours jet black with a milk chocolate head. Intense roasted coffee nose to this one. A bitterness, intense dark roast coffee and just a great beer all the way around. The alcohol is very well hidden with the other massive flavors that come to the forefront stoutbiiliards (17), Ohio, USA Jul 24, 2009 coffee and alcohol aroma with nice coffee flavor good coffee imperial stout overall alagnak (293), Littleton, Colorado, USA Jul 22, 2009 Really nice roasted coffee (duh!) aroma with a little boozy sweetness with a nutella kind of thing going. Flavor is heavy on the roasted coffee to start, finishes with a well-rounded sweet/bitter combo. Like a tootsie roll coated in fine ground espresso. Slight alcohol warmth toward the end plays well. Really good. stchloe (473), Portland, Oregon, USA Jul 22, 2009 How can I even begin to describe this beer? A true gem of coffee beers. While not as buzzy as others, the ABV is well noted. Its bitter chocolate coffee, also known as mana from heaven. TearsforBeers (170), Ohio, USA Jul 21, 2009 Pours thick black with 1cm disappearing tan head. Aroma is wonderful - roasted nuts, chocolate, vanilla, and wonderful coffee.
Flavor is great imperial stout (dark roasted malts, dark fruits, leather, etc) and great coffee, the commercial description doesn’t lie. Mouthfeel is a little thinner than I would like for a stout of this magnitude. Overall, a delightful brew. deyholla (504), Bloomington, Indiana, USA Jul 21, 2009 Bottle. Pours black with a relatively small brown head. Aroma had notes of alcohol and dark roast coffee. Also had a quite unpleasant note of chemicals, something like nail polish remover. I quite enjoyed the taste though with dark coffee notes through out and underlying notes of alcohol. If it wasn’t for the aroma I would love this stout. nerdrocker101 (102), Atlanta, Georgia, USA Jul 20, 2009 Bottle. Appearance: A rich, silky black pour with a thin, yet dense mocha head that fades to a ring. Pretty heavy lacing around the glass. Aroma: The nose is dark, roasted coffee with some malt and chocolate notes. Flavor: The taste is mainly dark coffee and bitter chocolate. Some notes of roasted malts are present as well, but the coffee is certainly the main attraction. I’m not complaining though. Palate: Medium-full body. Smooth texture with a bit of a dry finish. Overall: Incredibly drinkable and tasty. Certainly a great imperial stout with excellent use of coffee.
