Coltrane (108), South Carolina, USA Apr 18, 2009 Updated: Apr 19, 2009Wow. I absolutely adore coffee beers, and this one wins for the BLACKEST coffee taste. A ton of espresso. (Pisgah Valdez still wins for most coffee taste.)
A bit too much carbonation, as it stings a bit on the tongue. Maybe a good thing with all the dark chocolate (DARK) and coffee taste. The sweetness has no chance against this bitterness, and the aftertaste goes on for days. Just breathing in and out after you take a sip brings you happiness.
Maybe a bit much for AR (414), Georgia, USA Apr 18, 2009 The aroma of this beer is in itself complex. First a strong coffee aroma is present and then chocolate and caramel smells waft through the air.The smoothness of this beer is wonderful. Not many stouts, especially this flavorful, are so palatable. dmschefke (371), Eastpointe, Michigan, USA Apr 14, 2009 Pours a pitch black with small tan head. Aroma overwhelming of cofee and a little roasted malt in the background. Flavor is obvious of coffee, but it meshes with the malt, spice, chocolate and alcohol well. What a solid coffee stout. mixinnixon2000 (227), Chicago, Illinois, USA Apr 14, 2009 Bottle. I love this stout. Fantastic balanced aroma and flavor of dark malt and coffee. There is a hint of alcohol too. It has a little kick. Great stout. JohnnyJ (1282), Carlsbad, California, USA Apr 13, 2009 Nice, a bottle from mreusch, Thanks! Excellent stout. Dark black pour, fizzy dark tan head. Lots of coffee, roasted malt, smoke, and chocolate. Notes of vanilla and caramel. Not much fruit in this stout. Tasty! soccer290 (135), Highland Park, Illinois, USA Apr 13, 2009 12 oz bottle. Didn’t think much when General66 picked this up, then he showed me the rating. Then I read the description. Wowzers. Pours a dark black with a finger high tan head that is very thick and dissipates slowly. Smells SO strongly of fresh brewed coffee I uttered an obscenity. The smell is THAT impressive; and yet, smooth. Beautiful roasted coffee smells that tickle the nose and make you want to smell it more and more. Tastes (and god I am excited by this point) of the best coffee you have ever had in your life, not too strong, not too bitter, not too smooth, but very natural. Honestly this is an amazing beer, and one of my all time favorites. jesperhammer (260), Copenhagen, Denmark Apr 11, 2009 Bottled oct 2007 making it 1½ years old.
Close to black. No transparancy at all. Nice small lasting light brown head.
Definately coffee on the nose, but that kind of African coffee with a peppermint like smell. There is some vanilla, is this a trace of barrel aging?.
Very smooth on the tongue, and the alcohol is well hidden. The smoothness I find is often there in high quality stouts. It is really not more of everything but lots of everything, just balanced to not throw anything in your face.
Wauw this is good stout. j12601 (1149), Poughkeepsie, New York, USA Apr 8, 2009
On nitro tap at Dieu du Ciel. Pours a deep black with ruby highlights and a remarkably thick and dense tan to deep brown head. Aromas are sweet and full of roasted malt and coffee, with more notes of candy, and caramel, but a little sweeter than caramel, and without the touch of vanilla. Medium bodied (even with the nitro which usually thins things out), and sweet, a little like a milkshake. Finishes with a nice roast bitterness, and a little more sweetness. Hides its abv pretty well.
