Commercial Description:
Péché Mortel (French for "Mortal Sin") is an intensely black and dense beer with very pronounced roasted flavours. Fair trade coffee is infused during the brewing process, intensifying the bitterness of the beer and giving it a powerful coffee taste. Péché mortel is brewed to be savored; we invite you to drink it in moderation.

This stout style, high in alcohol and bitterness in order to favour preservation, was historically brewed to support the long and arduous voyage necessary to export the beer from England to Russia. The word Imperial comes from the fact that the beer was specially brewed for the Russian tsar’s court.

On nitro tap at Dieu du Ciel. Pours a deep black with ruby highlights and a remarkably thick and dense tan to deep brown head. Aromas are sweet and full of roasted malt and coffee, with more notes of candy, and caramel, but a little sweeter than caramel, and without the touch of vanilla. Medium bodied (even with the nitro which usually thins things out), and sweet, a little like a milkshake. Finishes with a nice roast bitterness, and a little more sweetness. Hides its abv pretty well.

Huge coffee in the aroma and on the palate. I love great quality coffee and the coffee that they used in this brew is outstanding quality. Dominates though and harder to find the chocolate notes that I love so well in an imperial stout. Full bodied, not quite worn out motor oil but still nice and full. Different yet very fun imperial stout. I would highly recommend this one especially if you love coffee.

Unfortunately the bottle version - but on the day I’m leaving to go back to Montreal, hopefully I’ll have it on draught as well. Pitch black coloured body with a thinnish fast-dying light brown head. 100% opaque, with very deep black colours - nice! Aroma of metal, deep roasted coffee and pit fruits, smoked peat and some nuts - very deep scents. Full-bodied; Strong assertive scotch, vanilla and oak flavours come out at first, then fading to a deep maltiness with coffee and chocolate coming through. Aftertaste shows alcohol - a warming oaky characteristic and of course, the deep caramalised sugars. Overall, a pretty good imperial stout - definitely showing complexity, but the warming qualities perhaps are a bit much. However, when you are walking in the chill of Montreal, this hits the spot. I sampled this 33 cL bottle purchased from Merchant’s in Dearborn, Michigan on 13-August-2008, sampled from home in Washington on 07-April-2009.

Bottle brought back from Portland, but thanks to golubj for originally getting me a bottle that I broke. Poured a black color, a bit thick, with a compact and long lasting tan/khaki head. Aroma was quite strong with coffee, roasted oats, and earth; less pronounced notes of cocoa. A pretty tasty and drinkable brew, although I wasn’t overly in love with the aftertaste. Flavor was undoubtedly dominated but coffee, but that soon gave way to roasted oats and chocolate. Only a mild sweetness. REally nice beer.

This black ale poured with a massive foamy tan head. It smells like a cup of good coffee. I waited for a few minutes for the head to subside enough that I could reach the liquid, and it was well worth the wait. There is a smooth and creamy coffee and chocolate flavor that is a pleasure to imbibe. The coffee masks the alcohol to the extent that it is just a rumor. Good to the last drop.

’07 bottle drank in the beginning of ’09. this coffee stout is just that. super rich coffee aroma and taste. coffee is bitter but the finish is almost sweet. very easy drinker, at least with age it is. this is a great coffee stout for those who like the style. just not as much depth as i would have liked. still a great drink.

A: Pours black as night with a huge two finger espresso colored head. The head lingered for quite some time before dying down to a simple collar. Nice thick lacing in spots. Overall a lovely looking beer. S: Wow coffee to the max. Tons of fresh brewed coffee aromas come wafting from the glass. The coffee aromas are backed by just a hint of charcoal. A tinge of sweetness can be detected, but the pure coffee aroma of this one is better than those found in world’s best coffee houses. T: Holy Shit!!! This is the one; I have died and gone to heaven. The taste is off the charts. Tons of fresh espresso hits the tongue and rushes thru the mouth and down the throat. The flavor was so intense. It just hung around on the tongue with the perfect degree of bitterness. There were hints of charcoal and smoke, but the coffee is what this one is all about. I started drinking this one at 51 degree and let it warm from there. As it warmed just a hint of sugary sweetness and milk can be detected beneath the wonderful coffee taste. M: Medium bodied, very smooth almost creamy. This beer went down wayyy tooo good for 9 percent. God I am in heaven. D: Uber, the best, I love it. The perfect beer for morning noon or night.
