sleestak (180), Williamston, Michigan, USA Oct 1, 2008 Une bottle. Pours ebony with a pinkie-high brown head that devolves into a crescent-shaped slick. Massive aroma of chocolate mousse and strong coffee. Drool. Taste is an amazing melding of creamy coffee and dark chocolate. Finish is mildly bitter and warmingly boozy. Lighter in body than any other RIS I’ve tasted, and strangley effervescent. (Not fizzy or anything, just surprisingly lively for a stout.) An all around amazing beer for the coffee generation. DrDavid (957), Johnson, Vermont, USA Oct 1, 2008 (Bottle). Powerful sweet fruity/coffee aroma. Red black color, brown head. Delicious coffee/chocolate flavor, with some bitterness that balances well. Lengthy coffee finish. Excellent concoction. GreatLibations (1440), Last Supper, Arizona, USA Sep 28, 2008 Ok gang, this is an IS. Almost black in color with strong roasted aromas. The head rises and falls leaving a good lacing. Medium full nectar with superb carbonation. A heavy roasted espresso disposition marks the grade. I drink this and I say to myself Jonpol, this is a classic specimen that even a troglodyte like Turbo can appreciate. Strong flavors resulting in a heavy roast and a mild sweetness creep up on my person leaving a fine mild bittering component to finish. mvcramer (229), Arlington, Massachusetts, USA Sep 27, 2008 The description from the brewer says it all. If you don’t LOVE coffee, then don’t bother. I’m not a coffee drinker, so I didn’t really care for this one, but I STILL recognize that this is one amazing coffee stout. Balanced brew with bold flavors. Looks gorgeous - you could use a pour from this bottle for a photo shoot pitching fine stouts. Proteus93 (66), Charlottesville, Virginia, USA Sep 27, 2008 Jet black... suitable for a ’coffee stout.’ Head on here is HUGE and lasts into eternity. Medium sized bubbles are the only thing that keep it from being a silky cream. Very nice.
A nice, smooth, iced French Roast. A nod towards espresso aromas, and a fine, creamy chocolate scent.
A prime example of what a coffee stout should be, as far as I’m concerned. I don’t know if I’d go QUITE so far as to say espresso, but certainly a fine dark roasted coffee. Little hints of the malts beneath it all sneak through, offering a touch of flavour diversity. Some hints of raisin sweetness and a light chocolate to top it off. Outstanding.
Rich, and just creamy enough for the style / flavours. The finish lingers on the palate forever, allowing each sip to be savoured for quite some time. An excellent beer, I prefer it over some others of a similar style such as Alesmith’s Speedway Stout or Southern Tier’s Jah-va. ABV makes it a sipper, but it’s a challenge!
jsh12bama (335), Alabama, USA Sep 26, 2008 Pours black with thick brown head. Nice tan lacing. Thick mouthfeel. Aroma of coffee and roasted malts. Taste is huge smack of coffee. Not a bitter taste from the overwhelming coffee taste. Great imp stout. nqualls (1429), Nashville, Tennessee, USA Sep 26, 2008 Bottle. I absolutely loved this beer. Poured an obsidian black with a one finger brown head that lingered for the entirety of the beer, and produced a huge amount of lacing. Aroma of was of coffee....and lots of it. Also present were hints of roasted malt and bitter chocolate. Flavor was intense coffee with a dry chocolate aftertaste. Body was slightly too thin to be rated a "5", but overall, one of the best impys I’ve had. If you don’t like coffee, this beer isn’t for you. minch25 (346), Columbus, Ohio, USA Sep 25, 2008 Updated: Jan 26, 2009Rerate. bottle, 2008. Appearance: black; THICK light tan cheesy head. Huge roasted coffee bean aroma; very dry roasty. Flavor - bitter roasted coffee bean; ’burnt’ dark chocolate. Extremely drinkable, medium bodied, impossibly long roasty bitter finish, almost acidic in its roast. It seems I had this severely underrated when I last had this at the brewpub.
On tap at DDC brewpub. Served almost warm in tulip. Black w/ creamy head. Concentrated coffee bean aroma. Creamy, acidic, some roasty bitter. Very good, very well made. Original score: 8 4 8 4 15 3.9
