Commercial Description:
Péché Mortel (French for "Mortal Sin") is an intensely black and dense beer with very pronounced roasted flavours. Fair trade coffee is infused during the brewing process, intensifying the bitterness of the beer and giving it a powerful coffee taste. Péché mortel is brewed to be savored; we invite you to drink it in moderation.

This stout style, high in alcohol and bitterness in order to favour preservation, was historically brewed to support the long and arduous voyage necessary to export the beer from England to Russia. The word Imperial comes from the fact that the beer was specially brewed for the Russian tsar’s court.

Bottle. Excellent coffee character. Slightly carbonated but goes down smooth. If you love coffee, this is a great choice.

Bottled sample via (and shared with) oakbluff. Jet black in colour with moderate carbonation. Aromas of roasted malts, caramel, vanilla, mild coffee, and earthy hops. Flavors are well balanced between dark roasted coffee, sweet vanilla chocolates, and earthy+grassy hops. Medium bodied for an imperial stout. Not really a blockbuster, but quite solid.

Bottle @ Plan B, Copenhagen. Ooozed from the bottle black and tan. I didn’t get the huge coffee blast I expected, more like a mocha latte, but that’s not taking anything away this is still a great beer! Lots of roasted malt and bitter chocolate with coffee notes of course. Great body and a nice dry finish. Maybe my habit of drinking coffee without sugar has come back to bite me.

Beautiful black color. Awesome coffee, fine tobacco and fruity bubble gum aroma, with hints of spice and red pepper. The flavor is smoooooth coffee, probably expresso, with a complimentary amount of malty vanilla sweetness. I just loved it, and am giving the first 10 I have ever given for flavor. I must put up a couple of these for special occasions.

Bottle at Volo. I am SO glad to see this beer finally available in Toronto! Kudos goes to Ralph’s son who informed me of the Peche Mortel after I was sadly informed that they were out of Oak Aged Yeti. This is a treat! Coffee. And I mean a LOT of coffee - and this is good coffee my friends. Thick black heavenly liquid swimming in chocolate, roasted malt, caramel and loads of coffee. If you are a fan of the latter, you must try this!

Huge thanks to GMCC2181 for sending me a few of these. This is a big big impy stout. This thing is nothing but coffee. Aroma is coffee, flavor is coffee, this thing even looks like coffee! Add to that a big alcoholic bite, and you have this beer. Texture is nice and thick. Boozy in spots, which I didn’t care for, but I really liked the over the top coffee nature. I wouldn’t quite rank this up with the big boys, but as a coffee stout, it was quite good. Porbably just below Bells Java Stout. Thanks again Gabe, I like this one a lot!
