COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Péché Mortel (French for "Mortal Sin") is an intensely black and dense beer with very pronounced roasted flavours. Fair trade coffee is infused during the brewing process, intensifying the bitterness of the beer and giving it a powerful coffee taste. Péché mortel is brewed to be savored; we invite you to drink it in moderation.

This stout style, high in alcohol and bitterness in order to favour preservation, was historically brewed to support the long and arduous voyage necessary to export the beer from England to Russia. The word Imperial comes from the fact that the beer was specially brewed for the Russian tsar’s court.

Black with tan head. Viscous. Smells like coffee, dark fruit, and chocolate. The roasted malts balance the coffee nicely and the beer is extremely silky. Delicious, well-balanced and as perfectly viscous and creamy as any great stout.

From notes. First reviewed 8/10/2011. Poured from an 11.5 oz bottle into a tulip. Péché Mortel pours a dark mahogany, with a bit of a cherry tint as the glass fills up. A small creamy tan cap sits on top. The head quickly fades to a thin film, but there are some nice spots of lace on the glass. This has a very balanced aroma. Chocolate, heavily roasted malt, espresso, and cream all blend together wonderfully. This taste takes me back to an outside cafe in Milan, sipping on a caffe latte. The flavor is fairly even for a few moments, with chocolate, roasted malt, and some vanilla providing the flavor. All of a sudden, a full burst of espresso and cream burst through, The body is lighter than I would expect ahead of time for a 9.5% imperial stout, but it is still north of medium. The carbonation is creamy but not that noticeable. The sweetness leaves a light stickiness and the coffee imparts a lightly astringent feel right at the end. Péché Mortel is simply a big, delicious, creamy coffee stout.

Draught at City Pub Black with a light brown head. Aroma heavy coffee, medium roasted and dark malts. Flavor heavy sweet (coffee, licorice, dark fruits), alcohol, some bitterness. Full body.

Pours black and completely opaque with a large mocha colored head sitting on top. Good retention. Aroma is delicious. Black coffee, roasted beans, A slight sweetnes and some alcohol. Taste is great. A big black coffee bitterness throughout. Like chewing on coffee beans, alcohol is hidden extremely well. Mouthfeel is full bodied and lightly carbonated.

Excellent beer. Pours oily black with a half inch light brown head that’s quick to fade. Aroma of espresso, dark chocolate, toffee, and vanilla. Tastes like it smells and more, with roasty tones and dark fruits. The alcohol is a quiet whisper in the silky, creamy mouthfeel.

Arome d’expresso. Robe brunâtre très foncée presque noire coiffé d’une mousse café au lait. Goût aux saveurs rôtis et de café. Carbonatation plus que moyenne. La meilleur bière québécoise?

Pours black with a brown/beige milky kinda fluffy head. Aroma is very sweet chocolate, some kind of milky sweetness to it, coffee, notes, weak earthy notes, big toffee, figs, soft coffee, roasted mocca and some vanilla. Taste is much more roasted and bitter than the aroma. Alot more bitter roasted coffee, hops and liquorice. Behind this there is sweet chocolate, vanilla, toffee and figs. Pretty awesome!

UPDATED: MAR 17, 2012 Bottle 341 ml [2011]. Apperance: Pours black with a medium light brown head. Arome: Strong notes of roasted coffee, dark fruits (?), vanilla and a bit of alcohol. Taste: Sweet with strong notes of coffee, a bit of smoke and a moderate bitter finish. Palate: Creamy, medium duration of the aftertaste. Overall: A very nice imperial stout, very complex, well balanced and available at modest price. Certainly one of the best from Québec.

29/07/2011 Brasserie 4:20 (341ml bottle). Nera, quasi impenetrabile, poco densa, schiuma color beige, morbida e poco persistente. Corpo medio, consistenza oleosa, morbida e vellutata. Birra malvagia, oscura, intrigante. Una meraviglia.

Bottle 341 ml. Pours black, with a beige moderate head. Some lacing. Smells coffee, sugar, alchool. Taste: coffee, bitterness, roasted cereal. The alchool only ticles the tongue while you taste, but does make itself see in the finish, wich doest unplease me that much. The bitterness is long lasting, and the coffee rocking out. Very drinkable efor the style. Keep em’ comin’, Dieu du Ciel!
