Black Pour, with a healthy tan head, good lacing. Heavy dark bitter coffee bean and roasted malt aromas. Mouthfeel is creamy and roasted coffee abounds. Not Overly complex, but the facets of this beer are so carefully balanced that it is difficult to find fault. NomDeBeer (397), Maryland, USA Aug 10, 2008 Updated: Jan 12, 2009Damn I love this beer. Smells like freshly ground coffee and molasses. Pours black with a lasting tan head. Very strong, bitter, grainy coffee flavor with hints of sweet vanilla. Smooth, creamy mouth feel. No hint of alcohol whatsoever - very smooth, enjoyable and drinkable. Possibly the best beer I’ve ever had. kubilai (33), , Quebec, Canada Aug 9, 2008 Great discovery. Aroma of black chocolate and expresso coffey. Black color with nice light brown foam. Flavor of coffee as well with a bit of ashes in the palate. Very nice IS. JasonG (700), Salt Lake City, Utah, USA Aug 8, 2008 12 oz bottle - Pours an opaque black color with medium sized light brown head. Aroma is full of cold pressed roasted coffee, fair amount of dark roasted cocao beans, hint of vanilla, oak chips, chalk, bit of ash. Flavor has loads of dark roasted coffee, some ash, bit of vanilla bean, with a fair amount of bitter malts in the finish and a touch of hop bitterness. Overall very nice, a bit too much coffee for me, but still a great IS. masonjer (557), Holt, Michigan, USA Aug 5, 2008 Poured black with a great big tan head. Aroma was huge coffee, cream and some vanilla. Taste delivers on the coffee as well, with still more cream to round it out a bit, roastiness with good bitterness to balance the sweetness. This was a nice beer, but not crazy complex, and nothing much to seperate it from the rest of the pack. KnN (712), Greenbelt, Maryland, USA Aug 3, 2008 One: I’m not really a fan of coffee. I can appreciate it, but it’s not me beverage of choice.
Two: I’m REALLY not a fan of burnt coffee, and this beer was full of almost nothing but. Smelled burnt, tasted burnt, left a big bad bitter aftertaste that lingered forever. I give it kudos for effort, but unless bad 7-11 coffee is your thing, there are definitely better Imperial Stouts to be had. Beershine (2677), Hue, Vietnam Aug 3, 2008 Updated: May 1, 2009Draught. A beer does not, could possibly not be more beautiful than this! Best lacing EVER. Black body with a mocha head and black roasted coffee bean aroma. Pure, unadulterated coffee blended with dense mocha delight and a hint of cherry. An absolutely splendid drink worthy of the gods. oteyj (713), Canterbury, New Hampshire, USA Aug 3, 2008 Updated: Aug 21, 2008***On tap at Dieu Du Ciel!***
Tulip. Pours jet black with one finger of thick foam. Aroma is dominated by coffee, bitter chocolate, with mountains of roasty malt. Flavor is an incredible blend of bitterness from the coffee and hop character with sweeter notes of chocolate and vanilla. Mouthfeel is thick, viscous and creamy. Every aspect of this brew blew me away.
***Bottle Conditioned***
Pours jet black with one finger tan head that dissipates slowly. Aroma is powerful and evident: tons of espresso, bitter chocolate, vanilla, and massive amounts of roast. Hard hitting and unyielding- not quick at all to saturate. Flavor is loaded with espresso and a bitter backbone of chocolate and roast. Robust, and not sweet by any means. Perhaps coffee is an acquired taste, but whether or not you have it, this beer is incredible. Flavors are all complex and wholly evident- each and every flavor can stand alone in its own right, but when married together they form a balance and complexity rivaled by few. Palate is thick and rich... creamy and smooth. Leaves a dry, slightly bitter but completely welcome finish. Aftertaste simply does not go away- tons of coffee and bitter roast. Ties on a nice little caffeine buzz as well as a bit of a normal buzz, though alcohol is unnoticeable. If your looking for a powder coated easy to drink stout, you probably wont find it here. this bold charactered brew is surprisingly quaffable, while retaining its robust and powerful qualities. This one is a sipper for the ages.
