Commercial Description:
Péché Mortel (French for "Mortal Sin") is an intensely black and dense beer with very pronounced roasted flavours. Fair trade coffee is infused during the brewing process, intensifying the bitterness of the beer and giving it a powerful coffee taste. Péché mortel is brewed to be savored; we invite you to drink it in moderation.

This stout style, high in alcohol and bitterness in order to favour preservation, was historically brewed to support the long and arduous voyage necessary to export the beer from England to Russia. The word Imperial comes from the fact that the beer was specially brewed for the Russian tsar’s court.

Poor head, but a potent coffee aroma that just leaps from the glass. Wonderfully creamy mouthfeel, slightly oily texture, but the carbonation. Slightly overcarbonated and very odd texture that actually takes away from the other components. The coffee flavour always dominant on the palate. Smooth, good bitterness and adds a great deal to the overall flavour. Overall, a very well-done beer "if" you enjoy huge amounts of coffee in your beer.

12oz bottle from WLV. Nose is somewhat subdued, a bit chalky and coffee. It is rich, though not super strong, if that makes sense. Peppery carbonation, prickly on the tongue. Very coffee in the back end, minimal cocoa. Deep black look with a fuzzy darkish brown head. Not perfect, but very tasty, nonetheless. As far as coffee stouts go, not in the top tier for me, though it is nice.

12 oz. bottle courtesy of illinismitty. Pours black with a med/large pillowy tan head that leaves a fuzzy lace on the glass. The aroma is roasted coffee with bittersweet chocolate. The flavor is similar with roasted coffee or even espresso being blended with sweet chocolate, dark fruits, and the slightest bit of ash. This is smooth drinking from start to finish. The alcohol is only noticable as a warming sensation while drinking, not in the flavor. One of the best coffee stouts I have had.

Pours black with a thick tan head. Strong roasted coffee aroma with a malty sweetness as well. Very nice coffee flavor with a balancing malty background. Extremely smooth. Tons and tons of coffee. Well made beer, great if coffee is your thing.

Bottle. Pours a ridiculous blackish brown with the darkest head I’ve ever seen - think chocolate and cream. Head is very impressive and intense. First aroma that came to mind was dark cocoa, with some prunes and milk chocolate sweetness. Surprisingly enough I don’t detect any coffee flavor in this one at all, it’s predominately heavily roasted malt in the palate, which is why I rate that one at 3. That being said, I have no doubt that coffee is actually added to this beer, but it’s more than likely such a well-balanced mix that I don’t detect anything being more obvious than the other. It’s one hell of an imperial stout though, a great example of one, and nothing intense as to overwhelm the senses. Much thanks to numbleprop for the hookup.

Pours pitch black with a dense one-finger head that lingers a bit and leaves a fantastic network of lacing along the side. Slightest bit of mahogany around the edges when held up to the light. Smell is dominated by dark roasted coffee with sweet cream and chocolate and roasted malts present as well. Big bitter espresso taste up front with a nice sweet chocolate and malt taste to balance the astringency. The coffee taste lingers for ages after each sip with alcohol making itself present throughout. Mouthfeel is super creamy but nice and crisp in the finish due to the coffee astringency. Carbonation leaves a nice tingle on the tongue. This is one hell of a coffee stout and I would certainly put it on my short list for best in that category. The coffee flavor comes across a bit astringent but I’m nitpicking.

12oz bottle purchased from Metro Joanette in Montreal. Pours black with a thin brown head. Nice, strong roasted malt aroma. First taste is very strong - an initial tanginess followed by the roasted malt, coffee and chocolate flavours. The pleasant tang remains throughout to the aftertaste with a decent level of bitterness.

Black pour, small brown head. Aroma is well coffee. Flavor is the same this is a straight coffee bean as if you were chewing it, it’s semi sweet and espresso like but it just comes down to it tasting like the coffee beans were boiled right in and then aged on them to top it off. Full bodied, good carbonation and a slick mouthfeel but with intense coffee bitterness. Really a nice coffee beer if you love a big brutal coffee but it does get to be a bit too much, overall it’s still a nice beer once in a while.
