Commercial Description:
Péché Mortel (French for "Mortal Sin") is an intensely black and dense beer with very pronounced roasted flavours. Fair trade coffee is infused during the brewing process, intensifying the bitterness of the beer and giving it a powerful coffee taste. Péché mortel is brewed to be savored; we invite you to drink it in moderation.

This stout style, high in alcohol and bitterness in order to favour preservation, was historically brewed to support the long and arduous voyage necessary to export the beer from England to Russia. The word Imperial comes from the fact that the beer was specially brewed for the Russian tsar’s court.

(Bottled) Almost black with a small, lacy and beige head. Extremely strong ashtray aroma with some licorice, but no alcohol. Burned-malty, very ashy flavor with tar, seaweed, and an ashy-sticky barley wine finish. Quite full-bodied, smooth-carbonated palate. It is strange how a beer so ashy can actually be this pleasant. Beautifully crafted!

#200! Bottle courtesy of GMCC2181. Pours a pitch black with one finger tan head. Nose is chocolate, espresso, cocoa and burnt coffee grounds. Palate is dark chocolate, French roast coffee, roasted barley and espresso with a slight hoppy bitterness in the finish. Lots of dark chocolates and coffee, both of which I really like. Creamy mouth feel with nice lacing. Alcohol is well hidden in this slow sipper. A very good impy stout that’s worthy of its lofty reputation. Thanks again Gabe!

I’ve had this many times, but now I have my own 12oz, no date from beerbuzzmontreal for myself. Eventually I’ll get around to putting in past reviews. Deep brown--black in the glass--with a small tan head, fading to a thick ring and thin film. The strongest aroma here is coffee, and anise comes next (as far as picking up aromas goes). Plenty of roasted malts and baker’s chocolate with some sweet brown sugar is noted. Flavor is drier and less sweet than the aroma had led on--not that it really smelled that sweet anyway. Scorched coffee and roast are up front with some anise again. The finish is dry and slightly ashy with some warming alcohol noted and bitterness peaking around a 3. Light prickly carbonation with a medium body. I remember the bombers of this being quite a bit better--maybe I’m wrong.

9.5%ABV. 12oz bottle. Aroma is ashy, coffee, and even some jalapeño aromas. Wow, lots of coffee flavors. Rich, over roasted coffee flavors. Burnt! Bitter coffee ground finish. Very different, very good. not sure of the high score though.

Pours a pitch black with a large frothy chocolate head that fades somewhat quickly. Aroma is coffee roasts with sweet caramel and vanilla notes. The taste is burnt coffee grounds with a bitter finish. A bit too harsh all around. Maybe aging it would make it mellow and creamier.

This was one of the greatest beers I have had. I really enjoyed the harshness of the roastyness in this one. The coffee is burned too much and acidic tasting like dirt-extract. I can’t see myself drinking more than three of these, but imperial stouts aren’t a style I penalize too much for lower drinkability because even the great ones I get sick of after three or four due to their heaviness. There was a light fruit flavor in the beer too, uncharacteristic of the style, almost like fresh oranges. This was one very different beer, incredibly harsh but so well done I was shocked with every sip I took.

As a java junkie and a beer geek, I was extremely excited to find this beer in my local store. This starts with an aroma of sweetened coffee, and pours black with a huge tan head. There is a bit of dark roasted aromas hiding behind the starting sweet coffee. Starts with a slightly sweet taste, that is quickly overwhelmed by a bitter roasted flavor. The coffee used in it seems to be a bit overroasted, adding to bitterness. Nice thick mouthfeel to the beer. However, I’ll still lean towards Speedway Stout for a coffee stout.

Bottle: pours dark black with a dark tan head and pretty nice lacing on the glass, aroma is heavy on the coffee, taste is obviously coffee flavored but not as overpowering as I was expecting, the beer also has some roasted malt taste, leaves a bitter aftertaste in the back of the mouth like you just drank some coffee. Very nice coffee stout - one of the best I’ve had.
