Péché Mortel (French for "Mortal Sin") is an intensely black and dense beer with very pronounced roasted flavours. Fair trade coffee is infused during the brewing process, intensifying the bitterness of the beer and giving it a powerful coffee taste. Péché mortel is brewed to be savored; we invite you to drink it in moderation.

This stout style, high in alcohol and bitterness in order to favour preservation, was historically brewed to support the long and arduous voyage necessary to export the beer from England to Russia. The word Imperial comes from the fact that the beer was specially brewed for the Russian tsar’s court.

I’m overjoyed to have my first sample of this from the source. The pour is so thick with head, that I sat and sniffed for 3-4 minutes before the first sip. The ashen aroma is offset by the warm bloom of freshly birthed beans. Tasting like coffee and nuts - I’m thrilled by their marriage. The body is so full, and the carbonation so dense, that the thick elixer is still on my tongue. For a non-coffee drinker to enjoy something this much - the quality has to be complete.

Bottle from brewdog bar, Sheffield. Black with a stodgy mocha head. Aroma is rich dark roast coffee and cocoa, very decadent. Taste is sweet and bitter, nice tingle from the booze. Oily and smooth with subtle carbonation. Really excellent stuff, best beer I’ve had in a while.

This was poured into a snifter. The appearance was a dark brown color with a creamy tan slim finger’s worth of a head. Lacing was speckled and clung initially but slid later. The smell had a nice sweet to bitter espresso flavor up front initially. As it warms, light tobacco, dark chocolate, slight vanilla and an ever so slight licorice meld for a wonderful flavor. The taste was most a bitter to roasty coffee to milk chocolate. Delicate on the aftertaste, there’s some sweet to bitter coffee notes. Dry and roasty to semi-sweet on the finish. On the palate, this one sat about a medium in body with a delicate sipping quality about it. Roasty feels roll about on my tongue creating a slight dryness on my tongue. Overall, to me, this was an absolutely wonderful Double/Imperial Stout that I would love to have again.

Dark pour with a really roasty aroma. Strong coffee flavor but doesn’t cross the line of too much coffee. Overall, a nicely balanced coffee stout that isn’t overly complex but executed really well.

Svart som natten och ett rätt högt skum. Kaffe och choklad i doft. Väldigt behaglig och djup smak. Lång smak med bra bitterhet. Väldigt god ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

(Dieu du Ciel Péché Mortel) Bottle 341 ml, from free beer week. Served into a snifter at home, ABV 9.5% Pitch black colour on the body, small but thick dark brown head on top, with very good retention. Aroma has coffee, roasted malts, nice chocolate notes, fudge, light alcohol after a swirl of the glass or two. Taste has also plenty of chocolate and fudge, roasted malts, light vanilla, notable alcohol, chocolate cake, light coffee. Thick body, soft carbonation, sticky on the palate with a creamy and smooth texture. Great beer.

On tap @ What’s Brewing 15. Pours pitch black, with a finger thick creamy mocha head. Aroma is sweet roasted malts, with cocoa, vanilla and lactose, as well as coffee and liquorice. Full, velvety creamy body, with soft carbonation. Flavour is sweet roasted malts, with coffee, liquorice and tobacco, as well as dried fruits and oaken barrels. Very nice in tasting portions.

Bottle at Dughoose Merchant City. Pours opaque black with no head. Aroma is coffee, creme brulee, caramel, slight smokey and peaty vibes picked up too. Taste is coffee bitterness, cocoa bitterness, fresh roast coffee, molasses, sweet creme brulee, sweet burnt sugar and slight hint of saltiness. Full bodied and quite silky.

aroma of black coffee. this one is pretty simple, just tastes like a cup of black coffee, but a really great one. kind of gritty taste which i am assuming is some of the coffee grounds. poured from a 12 oz bottle at home.

Bottle with screw off top!! Pitch black pour with a tiny tan head that fades quickly with little lacing. Nose is coffee, roasted coffee, chocolate and some vanilla. Nice coffee and chocolate throughout with a sweet toffee background to support the whole. Vanilla notes are a bit more present in the taste. Medium to full creamy mouthfeel with a long bitter/sweet finish. The alcohol was hidden well, but felt.
