Black coloured beer with a thin beige lace. The taste is slightly sweet and becomes more bitter towards the finish. There is mostly roasted coffee, some chocolate and liquorice. Well bodied, oily beer. Really good. 5000 (2900), Hardened Liver, Washington, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | May 27, 2005 Bottle for rating #1100: Nearly black, large frothy brownish head, extremely thick lacing. Certainly looks fantastic! Very raw coffee grind aroma, so much so that is nearly outdoes any aspect of a normal stout. Subtle burnt malts, charred wood/campfire on the nose. Even a bit of earthyiness accompanies the coffee. Not as assertive coffee on the tongue, at least compared to the aroma. A rich, malty aspect of the beer is more noticable here than in the aroma. Emergence of hops halfway through, but fades through to the finish. Fairly assertive coffee background throughout all phases of this beer. It is also fairly sweet. However, doesn’t seem as strong as Speedway Stout. Big body, quite strong, but seems a bit spritzy on the tongue. The ABV is slightly noticable, but blends fairly well. Lonely coffee on the exit, slightly dry. If you like your coffee, this one is a no brainer. Thanks goes out to slob and radiomgb for providing the samples!

How: Tap, nitro-tap, cask, bottle. Many many many times.
The look: Opaque black body with a tan head (long tasting nitro-tap, short-lived from the bottle)
In long: Intense roasted coffee beans nose. Taste develops chocolate flavour reminiscent of powdery extra-high % (99%) cacao black chocolate bars along with the roasted coffee beans. Medium-high roastiness level. The high roasted level makes for a semi-dry beer that is surprisingly highly drinkable for a 9.5% brew. I can drink bottle after bottle without getting tired of it. Alcohol is well hidden and more importantly there is almost no sweetness apparent. I must be a real immoral person because I’m not stopping after seven Deadly Sins. after4ever (2863), Brier, Washington, USA

Enormous coffee nose--doesn’t even smell like a beer, no matter how long you wait. Thick, creamy body. Acrid acetic coffee hits you as soon as the beer hits your lips, and immediately starts drying out your mouth. So sharply atringent and coffee--laden that it doesn’t really taste or drink like a beer. Long ashy finish. DougShoemaker (2856), Toronto, Canada

Full roast coffee nose, hint of chocolate, black as night, big cappuccino head, oily lace. Roast coffee flavour, chocolate and liquorice too. Full bodied, bitter as can be, oily, resiny. Majestic! The 2003 must have been heavenly?! Ibrew2or3 (2848), Safety Harbor, Florida, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Feb 7, 2008 Courtesy of wetherel who opened this gem at the fordest tasting sharing it with fordest, toncatcher, padrefan98 and wetherel. Pours very dark with deep amber and thin head. The aroma is a fist full of coffee grounds and cigar ash. There’s mild roasted malts and burnt malts out the back. The taste is an initial bolt of rich chocolate followed closely by coffee grounds, some mild astringency from the coffee and a hit of licorice. It is smooth and ends rich and creamy. | 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Apr 10, 2005 Thanks to Jeff for this bottle. Pours very dark brown, close to black, with a tall brown head leaving lots of lacing as you drink. This brew had an amazing fresh roasted coffee aroma, very espresso-like, reminded me of the freshness of Bells Java Stout. Some chocolate was found at up front with a more of a burnt coffee in the finish. Very smooth creamy mouthfeel. This was a very nice coffee stout, very smooth with a well hidden alcohol content.
