4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 CaptainCougar (6835) - Columbia, USA - NOV 10, 2003
UPDATED: AUG 17, 2008 First 11.5oz bottling exported into the US: Much sweeter and smoother than the earlier 22oz bottles. More reminiscent of the tap versions at the brewpub. Good residual malty sweetness melds well with the coffee flavors throughout. Very enjoyable and similar to Founders Breakfast stout.
Second batch made for export to US, tried on tap at DDC 7/9/05 (8,5,9,5,17): Now this is what I remember. Very smooth and creamy with great coffee balance. Much better than the first bottled batch and more true to recipe. Good coffee and roasted malt complexity throughout.
US bottle shared by goldtwins first batch (7,4,9,4,15): Pours a viscous, nearly opaque with a tan head. Aroma is very tobacco smoky and ashy with lots of roasty bittering coffee. The flavor is nice and full with decent complexity, but the body could be thicker. This doesn’t come anywhere near the tap version.
On tap at the brewpub 11/10/2003 (8,5,9,5,17): Pours a rich thick dark black with a creamy nitro dark tan head. The body seems to have a certain shine to it. Aroma is complex, but subdued slightly by the nitro tap. Thick dark chocolate, plum, molasses, plenty of bittersweet coffee and even strawberries are all present in the nose. Body is rich and robust and has an almost gritty sugary, yet viscous texture. A very unique imperial stout with a great emphasis on dark chocolate and coffee. I’d say this has more coffee flavor than Speedway Stout. Good complexity and nice balance of a lot of malty sweetness and coffee bitterness. The finish is a more subtle continuation of the body. A near sensory overload and very enjoyable.
3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20 jackl (756) - London, Greater London, ENGLAND - JUN 1, 2012
Tap @ CBC. Deep brown color with no head. The nose is light bitter chocolate and roasted malts, booze-soaked wood. The taste is chocolate espresso beans, cherry liqueur, Very sweet and heavy. Brown sugar. The body’s full, plenty of sugar (diiiiabeetus!) and booze. Soft, viscous and oily. Very nice, though a bit flabby.

4.5 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20 BHeart (21) - - MAY 26, 2012
Strong coffee smell, almost a bit of bourbon or dark chocolate. All follow in the taste, extremely dark, rich and strong. Almost impossible to stop drinking, one of the best stouts out there.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 ClubGonzo (1979) - Bergen, NORWAY - MAY 25, 2012
On tap @ Copenhagen Beer Celebration. Pours a jet black body with a medium creamy beige head. Nose is intense mocha/filter coffee tones with powdery chocolate hints. Nice, but I’d like a bit more complexity. Taste is mocha, filter coffee, dark chocolate and hints of nougat. Velvety mouthfeel which feels occasionally disrupted by bursts of carbonation. Strange. A very nice coffee-based imp stout, but I do feel it’s a bit overrated.

En riktig höjdare. Intensiv, kraftig och fyllig smak av framförallt kaffe och då menar jag kaffe på riktigt. Len och krämig och med en balanserad eftersmak. En liten efterrättspärla till stout.
