Commercial Description:
Péché Mortel (French for "Mortal Sin") is an intensely black and dense beer with very pronounced roasted flavours. Fair trade coffee is infused during the brewing process, intensifying the bitterness of the beer and giving it a powerful coffee taste. Péché mortel is brewed to be savored; we invite you to drink it in moderation.

This stout style, high in alcohol and bitterness in order to favour preservation, was historically brewed to support the long and arduous voyage necessary to export the beer from England to Russia. The word Imperial comes from the fact that the beer was specially brewed for the Russian tsar’s court.

Mondial de la Biere 2004. Starting off with a bang. Pitch black opaque, frothy/creamy cappacino head. Expresso, oak, vanilla, rum, bourbon, and alcohol aroma. Rich expresso, alcohol, rum, bourbon, vanilla, chocolate, roasted bitter flavour. Silky smooth, velvety, warming mouthfeel with a touch of alcohol burn.

2003 Bottle: Fresh coffe aroma emerges quickly on this one, turning woody and even to characoal as I swirled the glass. Jet black - like motor oil - with a tan head. Amazingly heavy, sweet deep roasted malt body giving off hints of black cherry, wood, chocolate and coffee. Espresso-like finish. Complex, but the coffee is countered and balanced with sweet flavors so this all comes together just perfectly. Slight boost of all the flavors from the alcohol, which is rather in the background. Thanks MartinT and tiggmtl for enjoying this with me. Can’t say enough good things about this beer.

22oz Bottle at The Moan and Dove. Official USA release party. This beer smells like a high end coffee shop. This thing is immensely quaffable. I sniffed this beer for about 15 minutes. It is truly a great aromatic beer if you like coffee. Pitch black with a small brown/tannish head that is smaller than I’d expect. Very roasty and extremely coffee-full. I cannot imagine the coffee flavors in this. It actually tastes more like coffee than beer. Alcohol in this? No way. No alcohol detected. Tastes just like an espresso that’s more cabronated and roastier. A truly unique beer. Is this a classic Imperial Stout? No. Will coffee-lovers enjoy this? Yes. Will non-coffee lovers enjoy this? That is to be determined. For me, this was a bit thin as well.-----DRAFT at DDC RBSG05. This beer isn’t as opaque on draft as it is in the bottled for. With that said, the aroma is still delicious and the flavor is a bit sweeter and not as dominated by coffee. On draft, this is full-bodied and very very very smooth. I did not re-rate this, but I’d give it 10/4/9/5/19 if I did.

Very dark brown color, with a huge frothy tan head. Aroma is coffee, dark chocolate and alcohol. Flavor is Starbuck, a hint of vanilla, a touch of dark chocolate, a wisp of licorice with a lingering dry coffee bitter finish. Alcohol noticable, but not overpowering. Thick, rich milkshake palate. Has similarities with AleSmith Speedway.

Thank you DYIsoccer for sharing this treat. Pours a deep black hue with a small head. Aromas of coffee and chocolate and flavors of the same. This may be the closest to a mocha that a beer may ever be. Not the greatest, but very good. this is still no where near as good as the expedition.

Coffee and alcohol dancing a tango. This beer feels like a velvet curtain going down your throat. A dessert beer or maybe a dessert in itself.

@ Argo0 and Kathy’s 2006 Holiday Gathering - Obsidian black, thick dark tan creamy head. Rich inviting nose of the blackest, most bitter used coffee grounds you could imagine. Upon warming, further tones of roasty black chocolate, cream, and light caramel emerge. Flavor holds true to the aromas as I feel the caffeine buzz setting in. ABV expertly hidden. Full bodied and velvety, soft carbonation, coffee laden finish. Waiting forever to try this, and it was exactly what I expected. A fantastic stout for the coffee lover in me. Thanks for sharing Jacco...

Bottle. Thick brown head on black beer. Strong licorice, caramel and chocolate nose. Tastes as advertised with big alcohol note. Tasty brown sugar flavour with lots of coffee. Very tasty.
