nwilder (36), Denmark Mar 12, 2008 It pours black as night with mahogany highlights and a light brown head. In the nose it comes across roasted and raiseny, almost burnt, with elements of coffee. The flavor is big and complex. Malt sweetness and alcohol, balanced by french-roasted coffee bitterness. The flavors fusing perfectly, propped up with a moderate carbonation and a lingering dark coffee element in the end.
golubj (1085), Redwood City, California, USA Dec 1, 2008 bottle. viscous black pour with caramel brown head. aroma is lots of roast and coffee and cream. flavor is similar, acidity of the roast up front, but sweet malt and chocolate join in later. Aroma - coffee.
Taste - burnt espresso coffee.
Mouth - full of coffee.
Finish - coffee. MegaMan2OO6 (20), Elmhurst, Illinois, USA Nov 26, 2008 (11.25.08) 11.5 oz. bottle: Pours an opaque black with a coffee-colored head that settles into a thin foam with a center island. Aroma is all espresso, hitting you before you can even lift the glass. Behind the roasty espresso aroma, some dark chocolate and maybe caramel smells. Taste is espresso again, somewhat creamy, with the roast coming through again in kind of a smokey way. Palate is appropriately thick, with lasting flavor. Overall, for me it hits the coffee flavor better than Founders Breakfast or Mikkeller Beer Geek Breakfast, but not in as complex a way as Southern Tier Jah-Va or the inimitable Three Floyds Dark Lord. Spab (68), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Nov 26, 2008 Draught at Volo. Pours a rich black with large tan-brown head and some lacing. Huge coffee nose with roasted malts. Super strong coffee flavour but with other notes in there (fruit, sweet malts) that give it some sweetness. Long roasty finish. Medium-heavy body. Certainly impressive although a little coffee crazy for someone like me who’s not wild about coffee. bigrond (886), factoryville, Pennsylvania, USA Nov 26, 2008 I was very impressed by this beer. Very complex, very dark. It’s appearance is as good as it gets, flavor and palate are near perfection. The price was steep. $10 for a 11.5 oz. bottle. This brew is a little above my pay grade to drink everyday, but I would if I could.
