COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Péché Mortel (French for "Mortal Sin") is an intensely black and dense beer with very pronounced roasted flavours. Fair trade coffee is infused during the brewing process, intensifying the bitterness of the beer and giving it a powerful coffee taste. Péché mortel is brewed to be savored; we invite you to drink it in moderation.

This stout style, high in alcohol and bitterness in order to favour preservation, was historically brewed to support the long and arduous voyage necessary to export the beer from England to Russia. The word Imperial comes from the fact that the beer was specially brewed for the Russian tsar’s court.

UPDATED: AUG 2, 2009 Rerate: 11.5oz bottle again. Something must have been off in that last bottle, because this is delicious stuff. Pitch black with a medium tan head. Big mocha aroma, with just a hint of greener coffee bean, but plenty of dark roasted coffee and dark chocolate, with a slight smokey, burnt quality. The flavor is massive coffee and sweet and roasty malt. Teetering on burnt, but not really falling over the edge. Bitter like espresso in the finish, with light acidity. Full bodied and smooth. Very much like eating a bitter, espresso filled chocolate truffle. Almost like coffee with beer in it, but I like it. 11.5oz bottle. Black with a medium tan head that settles to a sparse foam slick. Slightly burnt green vegetal coffee aroma. It’s a bit harsh to start but after thirty minutes or so, it mellows into a simply sweet and stale coffee aroma. A bit sweet on the tongue, but with an over-roasted and vegetal coffee character, that ends on an alcoholic and slightly burnt bitterness. Syrupy but also a little thin. I don’t get this one. tastes like they burnt the coffee beans and then let the coffee sit out overnight before adding it to the beer. Honestly hard to finish this one. (4,4,5,3,8=2.4)

11.5 oz bottle from Supermarket Liquors. Black and thick with a creamy light brown head and patchy lacing. Rich roasted coffee, malty aroma. Similar flavor with light chocolate and light booze. Full robust body with a smooth creamy feel and a warming finish. Top fuckin notch.

Wonderful. Roast coffee and chocolate malts and barley in perfect balance. Beautiful appearance in the glass with great cling and a persistent head. Opaque with deep chocolate coloring. Clean and resolute on the palate and begging for a second, third, fourth.....wait, why not sip all day? ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

This brewery can do no wrong. Got a free mini pour at Prohibition. Espresso mouth with a twangy tongue of porter. Fantastic. First real day of spring on Canada so not sure this is how I want to drink the season in. But I will be back on a dark, stormy night.

A: Harsh chocolate and bitter coffee - I mean that in the best possible way App: Dark black, little lacing T: Bitter coffee and chocolate, some light hops in there. A tremendous imperial stout to begin with but the coffee really ramps the flavour up. P: A little thinner than expected, but oily with the right amount of carbonation. O: Best Imperial Stout I’ve had yet as well as the best coffee-flavoured brew. I am loving everything I’ve had from Dieu Du Ciel so far

Backlog rating 3-18-2009 (Bottle) This beer has a medium sized tan fizzy head with good retention, opaque body with a black hue, and one ring of lacing. The aroma is roasty, coffee, malt, and chocolate. The taste is roasty, lots and lots of coffee, malty, chocolate, and bitter. The palate is smooth, has a dry finish and this is a medium-full bodied beer. All-in-all, a very, very tasty beer, sipping beer given the ABV, definitely worth trying, and a beer I would drink again.
