Péché Mortel (French for "Mortal Sin") is an intensely black and dense beer with very pronounced roasted flavours. Fair trade coffee is infused during the brewing process, intensifying the bitterness of the beer and giving it a powerful coffee taste. Péché mortel is brewed to be savored; we invite you to drink it in moderation.

This stout style, high in alcohol and bitterness in order to favour preservation, was historically brewed to support the long and arduous voyage necessary to export the beer from England to Russia. The word Imperial comes from the fact that the beer was specially brewed for the Russian tsar’s court.

33cl bottle at home. Dark brown pour with a coarse-grained tan head. Notes of roasted coffee beans as well as filter coffee, dark chocolate, cocoa, roasted malts, a bit of caramel, molasses, smoke, subtle bitter cherries and plums. Medium to full body, low carbonation and a roasty bitter finish.

330ml bottle. Pours almost pitch black. Thin line of beige froth on top. Spices, coffee, hints of cocoa beans, hints of chocolate in the aroma. Spiceness, chocolate at first. Coffee in the middle. Spiceness, cocoa, roasted coffee beans in the end. Cocoa and coffee in the aftertaste. Rather heavy bodied, very well balanced, tasty imperial stout.

Robe noire et opaque. La mousse tient peu. Arômes intenses de café et fumé. Goût fumé, tourbe, chocolat, café. Le fumé reste en bouche avec une amertume prononcée. Excellente.

Bottle from Geers, Oostakker. Oily black colour, lots of brown creamy foam. Nose of roasted malts, lots of coffee. Bitter with light sweet hints. Nice imperial stout.

Pours jet black into snifter with generous foamy head. Aroma is coffee beans and alcohol. Body is thick and very heavy - almost a milkshake. This bottle might have had a hint of oxidation, which gave a metallic taste and left the rest a little watery. Decent coffee flavor with the right amount of bitterness. Really good with the potential to be great.

Top

There’s certainly a lot of religious tension in the dark world of Imperial Stouts. Even More Jesus, Big Bad Baptist, Bible Belt, etc. It’s perfectly natural that Peche Mortel take its place among the fallen. It’s the drink of the bitter souls who lust for the blackened grain. Peche Mortel pours opaque with light brown foam. Smells like espresso, dark fruit, cocoa, and booze. Bold, bitter coffee and charred grain tastes. Some sweeter undercurrents of chocolate and subtle cream. Despite the high level of bitterness, this is ridiculously drinkable for an Imperial Stout. Full-bodied and dry, yet it’s smooth and far from being too warm or heavy. The best of sins are always inviting.
