Péché Mortel (French for "Mortal Sin") is an intensely black and dense beer with very pronounced roasted flavours. Fair trade coffee is infused during the brewing process, intensifying the bitterness of the beer and giving it a powerful coffee taste. Péché mortel is brewed to be savored; we invite you to drink it in moderation.

This stout style, high in alcohol and bitterness in order to favour preservation, was historically brewed to support the long and arduous voyage necessary to export the beer from England to Russia. The word Imperial comes from the fact that the beer was specially brewed for the Russian tsar’s court.

UPDATED: JUN 9, 2012 A: Pitch black body. Thin khaki head. Nice retention of the head cap. Spotty lacing. S: Rich roasted coffee. Dense. Like walking into a local coffee shop. Its not simply one blend. Complex and invigorating. Hints of coffee and caramel. T: Doesn’t quite live up to the nose... but thats something I find quite common with these upper level imperial stouts... the nose tends to to be the stand out feature. But this certainly is no slouch. Rich coffee, espresso, chocolate, roasted caramel and a ever so slight hint of alcohol. M: Smooth. Ideal carbonation. Excellent lingering aftertaste. O: Perhaps the most drinkable imperial stout I’ve had that has this much coffee in it. Merci beaucoup, Brasserie Dieu du Ciel!

On tap, this is divine. Bottled, it’s still one of the best stouts you can find. Sweet with strong coffee, chocolate and roasted notes. Delicious.

Midnight black under a mocha coloured head that has great retention. Espresso and roasting the nose. Big bitterness in the flavour. Intensity of flavour is high resulting in some umami on the palate as well. Nitro packed keg gives a full bodied creamy mouthfeel. Coffee and bitterness on the finish. Exceptional.

Bottle. A- Coffee, slightly bitter, earthy, subtle vegetables. A- Dark brown color, black liquid, brown head. T- Bitter coffee, roasty, dry. P- Full body, average texture, average carbonation, dry bitter finish. O- Timed nicely to have this as my 100th Imperial Stout and my 1,500th overall rating. Pretty tasty! Tons of bitter coffee. Almost overbearing. Possibly a bit overrated but still a very good beer. I think I may have liked it even more if it wasn’t quite so fresh.

Great coffee/chocolate aroma. Great stout flavours. Very sharp bitterness, suits the beer well. No head, low pressure in keg? Hides the alcohol well .

Tap at DDC and later at Bar Hop 2. Black with extremely thick, exceptionally well-retaining and lacing mocha head. Nose and flavour of ground coffee, cocoa, toffee... Quite sweet, but nothing residual about it. The 9.5% is extremely well hidden, and integrated with the whole, giving off just a tiny feeling of heat in the throat. Could be a bit more heavy but that’s the only critique I have. Awesome stuff, yet again.

On tap at What’s Brewing 2015, day 2. Black body with a small tanned head. Aroma of dark malts, roasted coffee, layers of chocolate and sweet fruits, very appealing. Taste follows with a roasty bitterness, lots of cocoa, sweetened with a dark toffee taste, beautifully balanced. Fresh iced coffee and ash aftertaste. Impressive!

341ml bottle from LCBO. 9,5% alc./vol. Pours an opaque dark brown colour with one finger of beige head. Aroma of roasted malts, chocolate, coffee, and some hay. Complex taste matches the aroma with a dry and spicy finish. Moderate carbonation. The high alcohol content is concealed well with malty flavours. I’m not a big fan of Imperial Stouts but this one has changed my opinion. Excellent beer. Recommended.

UPDATED: JUN 5, 2016 Petite verticale entre un bouteille datant de mai 2014 (2 ans) et une datée du 27/04/2016 donc fraîche d’environ 5 semaines. Dégustés à 12° environ. 2016: Robe noire opaque surmonté d?un beau col de mousse beige, laiteux et persistant. La très faible effervescence permet au liquide de se tenir majestueusement et nous offre un superbe visuel. Au nez, on a droit bien entendu à un café léger frais moulu saupoudré de chocolat noir. Un malt rôti se glisse au travers et un côté lactose apporte un sensation de fraîcheur. Quelques effluves amers rappelant les noix grillées ferment la marche. En bouche, le malt rôti prend les devant accompagné d’une touche de chocolat au lait. Arrive ensuite le café qui se mêle tranquillement aux saveurs précédentes pour ensuite prendre plus de place. Cela nous amène vers une finale plus amère où chocolat noir et quelques petits fruits mûrs viennent atténuer l’amertume du café. Pointes d’anis et bois cendré. Texture laiteuse et côté moyen à rond. Un produit phare de DDC et plus qu’abordable.

2014: Robe noire opaque au mince col de mousse qui ici disparaît assez rapidement pour ne laisser qu’un mince cerne. Les arômes sont assez différents de la 2016. Le café est plus effacé et laisse place à un début de madère qui apporte son lot de petits fruits confits, dattes, chocolat noir aux bleuets, anis, notes d’alcool. On dirait que ce n’est plus là même bière. J’ai presque l’impression de sentir un porter baltique ou autres stouts poids lourds à 12% d’alcool. En bouche, le madère a effectivement pris le dessus, mais sans être trop intense. La carbonatation est elle aussi rendue à son point le plus bas. Beaucoup de baies confites, dattes, chocolat au lait. Le café est encore bien présent par son goût amer et grillé. Le malt semble plus onctueux et soyeux, son côté rôti semble avoir été amenuisé par la madérisation. La finale est elle aussi moins amère que la 2016. Plus sucré et plus fruité avec quelques traces de café et cacao. Texture plus soyeuse que laiteuse et corps beaucoup plus rond. 9-4-8-4-16=4.1/5

Deux Péchés, deux bières différentes mais délicieuses. C’est incroyable la différence après 2 ans. La Péché fraîche reste tout de même fidèle à la stout au café alors que la vieillie 2 ans commence à perdre ce profil pour se diriger vers quelque chose de plus sucré et fruité, comme une bière de dessert.
