COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Black IPA. Again, an american invention. This style was born at the "Vermont pub and brewery" around 1997. It could be said that this beer tries to be an hybrid between a regular IPA and a porter. The Pénombre presents a light body and well expressed tofferaction tastes. The whole is however dominated by an evident bitterness, which stays always in balance with the other tates found in the beer. In the after taste, the bitterness and hops flavours are growing slowly dut surely, sip after sip.

Pours black with a medium off-white foam head. Strong chocolate and roasted aromas first. Smoothy but very dry and crispy palate, roasted malt then a huge bitterness and a dry finish. A excellent Porter with evident and strong bitterness of an IPA. I love that beer.

Black color, light brown head. Sweet, malty, grainy, alcohol scent, no hops though. Malty, grainy, caramel to the dry side, dry, some toffee taste. Bitter grainy aftertaste. Smooth mouthfeel, high dry bitterness.

Bottle at WVRST. Opaque black with a nice tan head. Fruity and roasty aroma. Taste is wonderful: big American fruity hops, coffee, licorice, with a bitter finish. Medium body and medium carbonation. Yet another great one from DDC.

Just finished 3 bottles at Pub St. Alexandre in Quebec City. Wonderful balance of hops and malt. Less hoppy than I would have expected for a microbrewed IPA, but almost just the right of hops for the beer in actuality. Wonderful. I would like a tad more bitterness, but the beer is not too sweet either. I am really looking forward to having more.

Tap. THIS is a black IPA?? Pours opaque black with a small tan head and great lacing. Aroma is cigarettes, dark roasted malts, coffee. Flavor is lightly sweet, light bitter, leading to a bitter finish. However, bitterness with no accompanying flavors from hop alphas. Medium body, creamy mouthfeel. I was prepared to like this as a porter. As a black IPA, MEH.

Black bodied and tan stable head. Balanced aroma with coffee, roasted malts and fresh yeast combining grassy and forest hops. Mouth filling body, light tinteling palate and medium bitterness. Malts dominate the taste, but solid bitterness, that’s not too complex. Short, drinkable aftertaste. Nice brew. (12oz bottle from Bière Cultes)
