Black IPA. Again, an american invention. This style was born at the "Vermont pub and brewery" around 1997. It could be said that this beer tries to be an hybrid between a regular IPA and a porter. The Pénombre presents a light body and well expressed tofferaction tastes. The whole is however dominated by an evident bitterness, which stays always in balance with the other tates found in the beer. In the after taste, the bitterness and hops flavours are growing slowly dut surely, sip after sip.

On tap at the brewpub. Pours a dark brown with a thick light tan head. Aroma of bitter roasted malt, char, light coffee grounds, earthy hops, citrus. Flavor of dark roasted malt initially with chocolate and bitter citrus hops. Lots of porter influence here but the finish is bitter and hoppy. Great black IPA. Less overt hoppiness like your standard IPAs but it’s definitely a hoppy porter. 8/4/8/4/14 (3.8/5)

Grainy pumpernickel with some roast and metal. Almost opaque cloudy brown under a dotty beige cover. Roasty and toasty carafa with a medium hops bitterness, vanilla. Not so much hops flavour. Medium body, moderate carbonation, lingering bitterness.

341 ml bottle from Premier Wine and Spirits. Pours a near black dark brown with modest-sized beige head. Aroma is quite roasty malt with some spiciness and flowers. Flavour is also rather roasty with some coffee, smoke and an interesting spicy, floral hoppiness. Solid roasty bitterness in finish. Good one.

Excellente.

Tap at Copenhagen Beer Celebration 2012. Pours black with a lustrous, tan foam head. Some yeast and toasty dough in the nose. Some spicy florals. Medium sweet flavor with burnt earth and grass, mild yeast, light smoke. Medium bodied with fine to average carbonation. Roasted malt finish, some oily cocoa, light alcohol, fair bitterness, a bit of grapefruit. So so.

Bottle, pre-RBAG 2013. Very dark brown pour with a dense tan head that laces nicely. Aroma is equally rich roast and citrus hops. Roasty palate with a touch of smoke, citrus and papaya notes, long bitter finish. Satisfying.
