Black IPA. Again, an american invention. This style was born at the "Vermont pub and brewery" around 1997. It could be said that this beer tries to be an hybrid between a regular IPA and a porter. The Pénombre presents a light body and well expressed tofferaction tastes. The whole is however dominated by an evident bitterness, which stays always in balance with the other tates found in the beer. In the after taste, the bitterness and hops flavours are growing slowly dut surely, sip after sip.

One of my favorite breweries, but i didn’t enjoy this one too much. Hard to distinguish the bitter roasted maltiness and the hoppiness. More like a roasty porter. It’s ok, but not one of the better DDC brews.

Toffee nose. Roasted malt flavor, toffee, bitter espresso finish. Very pleasant black IPA, smooth and well balanced.

Bottle from Mane Liquor. Quite a good version of the style but very robust. Heavy roast and ashy undertones to go with the citrus and pine driven hops. I like it. Burnt and heavy compared to most black IPA’s but enjoyable. Good stuff

Bottle, 34,1 cl - Opaque black beer with a tan. Aroma is malty with notes of caramel, licorice, pine resin, coffee and citrus. Flavor is roasty with notes of spruce, licorice, coffee and caramel. Long lingering flavor.

Tap at Mikkeller Bar. Dark black pour with a white head. Awesome! Citrus hops on top of a roasty base. Not too heavy. Very good!

On tap at the brewpub. Pours a dark brown with a thick light tan head. Aroma of bitter roasted malt, char, light coffee grounds, earthy hops, citrus. Flavor of dark roasted malt initially with chocolate and bitter citrus hops. Lots of porter influence here but the finish is bitter and hoppy. Great black IPA. Less overt hoppiness like your standard IPAs but it’s definitely a hoppy porter. 8/4/8/4/14 (3.8/5)

Grainy pumpernickel with some roast and metal. Almost opaque cloudy brown under a dotty beige cover. Roasty and toasty carafa with a medium hops bitterness, vanilla. Not so much hops flavour. Medium body, moderate carbonation, lingering bitterness.

4oz sample at Churchkey’s 3 Stars 1st Anniversary event. Pours a translucent, mahogany brown with some cloudy, white head. Nose is very piney, lemon, toast, soap, vanilla, some dried grapefruit. Flavor is soapy, sweet, chalky, malt, toast, brown sugar. Dry, lightly spicy finish. Solid.

Pours black with a thin white head. Some decent hops in the aroma with a roasty finish. Finishes sweet and piney. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
