Black IPA. Again, an american invention. This style was born at the "Vermont pub and brewery" around 1997. It could be said that this beer tries to be an hybrid between a regular IPA and a porter. The Pénombre presents a light body and well expressed tofferaction tastes. The whole is however dominated by an evident bitterness, which stays always in balance with the other tates found in the beer. In the after taste, the bitterness and hops flavours are growing slowly dut surely, sip after sip.

341ml Bottle - Black with a small tan head. Coffee, liquorice, pine , roasted malt and a hint of burnt rubber in the aroma. Roasted taste with pine, coffee, soapy hops and cocoa. Fairly well-balanced compared to some beers of this type. Enjoyable and easy to drink.

Ar: heavily roasted, coffee, licorice, ash, smoke, some fruity hops, but only faint, grapefruit, resin some light alcohol. Ap: black colour, medium beige head, lots of lacing. F: lots of salty licorice, coffee, ash, big bite, grapefruit, resin, citric, lots of roastiness, more so than is usual for the style, but very appealing. P: medium body soft carbonation. T: very good indeed.

Bottle. Dark brown/black with murky sediment at the bottom of the glass. Medium big brown porous head that leaves some lacing. Aroma has som sweetness of caramel and chocolate, but mostly bitter inky notes of bitter herbs, licorice and pine needles. The taste also have a gentle sweetness of caramel but also a sweet note of oranges/Fanta, but then comes a quite harsh inky bitterness with bitter herbs. Aftertaste has a hint of chocolate and salmiak. Medium bodied with soft tickling carbonation. Light texture. It’s ok, but I find the bitterness way too inky and hard.

Bottled, from Systembolaget. Near black, mid sized head. Aroma of salty licorice and grapefruit. Mid sweet with medium body and clean, rounded mouthfeel. Licorice and menthe, some citrus. Really bitter finish. Rather elegant and relaxed.

Mycket trevlig arom och färg. Smaken känns dock något mer åt porterhållet än Black IPA hållet.

Bottle from Omni. Pours an opaque black with a bit of fine tan head that dissipates fairly slowly. Smell is distinctly hoppy with some citrus, fruit, and some spruce, and just a slight hint of roastiness. Palate is on the lighter side of medium bodied with some lacking carbonation. Taste is spot on for a black IPA, slight sweet roastiness at first then the bitter builds strongly before dissipating and giving way to a stronger porter-like roastiness. The aftertaste is more bitter than roasty and seems to build throughout the beer. Very nice example of the style.
