Black IPA. Again, an american invention. This style was born at the "Vermont pub and brewery" around 1997. It could be said that this beer tries to be an hybrid between a regular IPA and a porter. The Pénombre presents a light body and well expressed tofferaction tastes. The whole is however dominated by an evident bitterness, which stays always in balance with the other tates found in the beer. In the after taste, the bitterness and hops flavours are growing slowly dut surely, sip after sip.

The first that hits me is the strong aroma of rosted grains, which I do not associate with a Black IPA. It smells more like a porter or stout. The taste is likewise. With some saltyness and a bitter finish. This is not how I like my BIPA. But otherwise, nothing in the aroma or taste that bothered me. An ok drink.

A decent and well-balanced BIPA, if nothing groundbreaking. Pours black with good head, decent lacing. There’s some roast malt and some hops here. A slight note of anise. Consistency is thick and taste leaves bitter. Bottle at The Only Cafe.

341 ml bottle. Pours a very dark brown with notable sediment and a very small beige head. Aromas are rich, roasty malt, molasses, nuts, woody aromas like an oak barrel, and maybe a touch of alcohol. Tastes are balanced between roasty and bitter. Smooth and well balanced without a lot of carbonation. Uncomplicated but pleasant. ---Rated via Beer Buddy

Aroma: Smelling of bread, coffee, pine and grass.
Appearance: A black brown colored beer. A yellow/tan head with good lacing and good curtains.
Taste: Tasting bread, ashes, dark coffee, orange peel.
Palate: Medium carbonation, a sticky texture. A medium body with a somewhat dry finish.
Overall: A BIPA that works.
Note: Cask at Dieu du Ciel Reviewed 2013-03-22.

On tap at Underground. Burnt, roast, light bakers choco, dry stout nose, caramel, sweetness that is sort of fruity. Solid hard bitter taste, long roasted malts, pine, caramel. It’s a black IPA. They are never all that good.

Bottle. Bottled on 01/13. A: minerally (crayfish, seeweed), burnt with a hint of smoke. Faint fruity hops in the background. A: Low to medium carb, with small off-white head. Pitch black. T: medium sweetness, very bitter, lightly sour, salty, heavy on the roast, with some tropical hops and lingering bitterness. P: medium bodied with roast, hoppiness and caramelly sweetness. Overall a hoppy sweet stout. Not the balance I look for in a BIPA.

Draft to glass Caramel, coffee, bread, pepper. Deep brown with a creamy brownish head. The taste is primarily a porter, the IPA is overwhelmed.

6.5% ABV. from the bottle. The coffee notes and roasted malt take over the hop smell in this one. Pours a dark brown colour with a big, creamy-foam head that is beige, long lasting and gives out loads of sticky lacing. The roasted malt is helped out in the taste with some caramel malt to soften the burnt flavours. Sweet light butterscotch and fruity aromas eventually come out. Again, the hop is not as overpowering as I have tasted in other Black IPA. Beautiful mild warming and bitterness in the mouthfeel. Some burnt wood comes out in the finish to linger with the hop. Easier to drink than the Great Lakes Brewing Impy Black IPA I had a few weeks back, but still prefer the other overall.

Another great effort from an always exciting brewery. Pours cola black with a head that fades to a ring, little bit of lacing. Nose is grassy and burnt. Aromas of grassy hops, some limited espresso bitterness. Tastes are light sweet and medium bitter. Light body with medium carbonation.
