Cask Days 2009 @ volo. dark murky brown with almost no head. nice pungent hops in the nose. the roasted malt shows in places but this drinks a lot more like an IPA then other example of this style i had at the fest. the most rounded and balanced beer i had at cask days, probably had a slight advantage because this one isnt a one off.

Cask Days 2009 @ Bar Volo, Toronto, ON: A black IPA! Another in the series of ’beers I was going to homebrew not knowing they already existed’. FFS. Nice deep brown pour, decent beige head for a cask pull. Aroma is very hoppy, while simultaneously roasty and serving up a dose of molasses.. Great! An amazing hoppy taste is balanced by roasted malts, just what I’d hoped it would be! Awesome.

First black IPA /so cannot compare it to other examples of the style. Dark Brown with beige head. Fantastic aroma. All the sweetness and roastiness of a stout with a great piny hop profile. Bold bitterness. The roasted malts and hops combine and pack a great punch. This is balanced by a sweet malt profile. Creamy and velvety. Mmmm.

Tap @ DDC. Very roasted aroma here with no shortage of IPA hopiness. Taste is dry and hoppy, some toasted bread here. Mouthfeel is very refreshing with a hint at being more creamy than your average IPA.

On tap at DDC. An interesting brew, as DDC already makes one of the darkest, maltiest, deliciousest IPAs around (Corne du Diable). This one falls somewhere between a hopped-up schwarzbier and a hopped up porter, as it demonstrates the colour, roast, and mouthfeel of a porter, with the nuttiness of a schwarz, and the hops of an IPA. I’d like to try this one again when I’m sober.

On cask at DDC. Pours pitch black, medium creamy moka head. Carbonation was very soft (I know its cask). Aroma quite hoppy. Notes of caramel and chocolate. Very fruity. Taste is grapefruit and piny hops, some caramel. Hints of roasted malt. Quite sweet. Low bitterness. Finish of hops and dry chocolate. Hops are balanced by the roasted malt and the sweetness. Thin body. Nice interesting beer.
