Black IPA. Again, an american invention. This style was born at the "Vermont pub and brewery" around 1997. It could be said that this beer tries to be an hybrid between a regular IPA and a porter. The Pénombre presents a light body and well expressed tofferaction tastes. The whole is however dominated by an evident bitterness, which stays always in balance with the other tates found in the beer. In the after taste, the bitterness and hops flavours are growing slowly dut surely, sip after sip.

This pours a very dark brownish black with a small tan coloured head that seems to last and leave some lace. Aromas of chocolate and roasted malts. Flavour consists of roasted malts, chocolate, burnt toast, coffee, citrus, and an overall moderate bitterness masked a bit by the malts.

Thanks to cfrancis for this beer. Pours a dark black with a red tinge and a frothy brown head that fades into a ring. Aroma of roasted malts, coffee, chocolate and some citrus hops in the background. Taste is coffee, chocolate flavors with a good blend of hops that get more bitter with every sip. Mouthfeel is creamy and smooth, could easily drink this beer all night. The most sessionable black IPA I’ve had.

Clear-ish dark brown/black colour with a tan coloured head. Aroma of hops, resin, fruit that is well integrated with roast, & hint of caramel. Hoppy bitter and burnt toast bitterness are well blended together in this medium to fuller bodied brew. Considering how hard this style is to do well, this one is phenomenal!

Bottle at Mondial. Really nice smooth drinking black IPA. Definitely an interesting beer worth trying.

Chocolate/coffee, citrus mixed in and bit of a earthy aromas. Nice dark color, bit cloudy, and good carbonation, and a small hazelnut colored head. light sweetness, medium bitterness and umami (love that word)! Creamy and lively (for a stout/dark IPA). Would love to know the number on the IBU scale for this Pénombre. I think it could better be named a stout than a dark IPA, but still, a very enjoyable beer!

A bit underwhelming and unbalanced overall with a beautiful dark opaque brown body and a fluffy porous beige head. The nose has contrasting roasted malts and torrefaction coffee notes with a moderate resinous pine and fresh citrus fruits. The malts are underwhelming with a mild roasted malt and a hint of coffee. The hops are subtle and don’t shine through the malts very well. Overall, its better than the average beer, but not an exceptional Black IPA.

341ml bottle pours a dark brown, almost black color with a 2 finger light mocha head that retains well and leaves a few spots of lacing on the glass. Aroma is very pleasant with grapefruit and pine and some light roasted grains. Taste is also nice with grapefruit and pine bitterness and an bit of roast with an underlying malty sweetness. Medium bodied with a nice mouth feel. A pretty decent brew that fits the style nicely.

341 ml. Noire. Sent le café. Amère mais l'amertume semble plus venir du malt torréfié que du houblon. Trop froide elle manque de corps, mais un peu plus tiède elle est meilleure. Intéressante, mais elle ne sera pas une "régulière"

341 mil bottle from Broue Ha Ha, served cool in a tulip glass. Deep brown-black, with a nice mocha head. A nice blend of rich dark malts and resinous/pine hops, grapefruit and C-hops, dark and hoppy. Medium-full body with velvety, creamy effervescence. More dark malt than the nose, roasted and almost burnt, fairly similar hop notes of grapefruit, pine and resin, a bit of other citrus, pretty nice for the style, in my opinion; dry with good bitterness and a long, C-hop and roasted malt finish. Great integration.
