COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Black IPA. Again, an american invention. This style was born at the "Vermont pub and brewery" around 1997. It could be said that this beer tries to be an hybrid between a regular IPA and a porter. The Pénombre presents a light body and well expressed tofferaction tastes. The whole is however dominated by an evident bitterness, which stays always in balance with the other tates found in the beer. In the after taste, the bitterness and hops flavours are growing slowly dut surely, sip after sip.

Bouteille 341ml. Couleur noire presque opaque, mousse moka fugace. Arôme de houblon résineux, malt torréfié, café, cendre, herbal. Goût de houblon, malt torréfié, café froid, amertume persistente. Carbonation moyenne-élevée, corps moyen-dense, huileuse.

Bottle (341 ml). Dark brown with a huge creamy beige head and good lacing. Aroma of roasted malt, citrus, resinous and some chocolate. Taste is of roasted malt, chocolate, citrus and slight/medium bitterness. Medium body, but heavy for the style. I prefer Black IPA that are more hoppy and drinkable, this one is more a Porter/Stout than an IPA and is not so drinkable. Still a very good beer from DDC.

Bottle 341ml. Pours very dark brown with huge creamy beige head. Nice lacing. Aroma is of roasted malt, vanilla, citrus, pine. Taste is of roasted malt, citrus, chocolate, sweetness, bitter. Palate: Medium body (somewhat thick for a Black IPA). Overall: Very good. Not easily drinkable and a bit on the "stout" side. But never too much. Very nice sweetness, interesting balance.

(25 mars 2012)

On tap at Copenhagen Beer Celebration. It pours a very dark brown body and a dense, finger-thick dark beige head. The aroma is mostly on the roasted side, some licorice blends in, and also a light hoppyness. Roasted flavor with some licorice, a touch of caramel sauce and some bitterness. Full-bodied, dry and pleasantly carbonated with roasted malts and some bitterness in the finish. It’s a really nice one, but far from being a Black IPA or whatever you choose to call it. I’d say stout instead. And one more please. 120511

On tap at Dieu du Ciel, pours a dark brown with an amber tinge and a small tan head. Aroma of smells more like a porter or light stout, with lots of roasted malt, slight hop character in the background. Flavour more resembles a black IPA, with an excellent and equal balance of roasted malt upfront, followed by bitter citrus hops. Great textbook black IPA - highly drinkable.

On tap at DDC. Pours almost black with a dark red tint. Aroma of roasted malts, earth, some caramel sweetness, like a porter. Flavour of largely the same. The hops are more prominent in the flavour. Nice. Medium bodied. Decent.
