Black IPA. Again, an american invention. This style was born at the "Vermont pub and brewery" around 1997. It could be said that this beer tries to be an hybrid between a regular IPA and a porter. The Pénombre presents a light body and well expressed tofferaction tastes. The whole is however dominated by an evident bitterness, which stays always in balance with the other tates found in the beer. In the after taste, the bitterness and hops flavours are growing slowly dut surely, sip after sip.

Lovely toasted malts and molasses. It’s black! Feels very nice, nothing lingering that shouldn’t be. Nice balance on the tongue: not too bitter, not too sweet...beautiful. Aftertaste is the same as initial. It just feels right. It has a big taste that isn’t too showy, could have this everyday.

Tap. Moderate malt notes of toasted and a hint of molasses, moderate resin for the hops, with raisin, prune, tar, licorice/anise and whiskey-like alcohol. Head is average size, between creamy and frothy, grayish tan with good yet thin lacing and is mostly diminishing.. Color is very dark brown. Flavor starts moderately acidic and bitter, then finishes lightly acidic and heavily bitter. Palate is medium, oily with a lively carbonation and a lightly alcoholic and very dry finish. Bold dark aromas and a nice feel in the mouth make this and excellent Black IPA.

January 1, 2012 ; 5.5% abv, 500 mL, on tap at DDC MTL; shaker Strong aromas of grapefruit and juniper from the hops. Leaning towards the IPA. Pours almost-black with a 1 cm thick pillowy tan head which gives heavy lacing. IPA, porter mix. Interesting IPA-like mixture of mango, grapefruit, pine, resin and some porter roasty coffee tones. Long lingering bitterness from the resin-like flavours, which really stick around. Somewhat bitey carbonation. Senses may have been a little dulled. Interesting foray into the style, definitely like an American IPA. Somewhat underwhelmed.

Draft. Pours near black with an off white head. Floral hoppy aroma with light roasted malts. The flavor has bitter floral hops and lightly roasted malts. Well balanced.

On tap Blind Tiger the 3rd of my DDC afternoon. Pours black with nice spruce nose. Tastes of piney bitterness, earth, toasted malt, and citrus. Nice refreshing beer after the craziness of my previous 2 brews this saturday

Dark brown, near black, nice head. Aroma: citrus, pine, resin, toast, coffee. Flavour is similar, roasty malts a little too forward for me - it’s more of a bitter roast story than a bitter hop story.
