3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Black in colour with a tan coloured head, good lacing down the glass. The aroma was a bit stouty, coffee balanced by hops, some toasted malts. The flavour is similar to a lighter porter with a strong hop bite, citrus, chocolate, moderate bitterness. Lightly bitter mouthfeel, medium body, high carbonation. Finishes long and hoppy with some burnt malts.
The one was a little weird. DDC have a good knack of pulling off some weird beers but this one seems a bit unrefined still. Needs some tweaking.
Draught at Mondial 2008, Montreal, Quebec.
Sampled on May 29, 2008.

Deguster au Mondial de la biere. Biere noire, sans etre completement opaque. Amere, corser et leger gout de bruler. Vraiment bonne.
Tasted at the Mondial de la biere. Black, but non-opaque, ale. Bitter, strong with a light burnt taste. Awsome.

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
On cask at Volo Cask Days 2008. Had to wait for this one to settle down a bit. Looks nice - brown with amber notes and a good sized creamy white head. Aroma is great - toasty burnt malt with lots of hops. Taste is good as well, just not as good as aroma - lots of hops and malt that do not quite come together perfectly. Medium body. Alcohol even sneaks in at 6%. A very good beer that I was thrilled to get a chance to try.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Cask. At Volo Cask Days 2008. Cloudy brown with a creamy tan-green head. Dry pine and nutshell bitterness to the aroma, light citrus malt backing, a little ’’wheaty’’, with some alcohol prominence for 6%. Slightly sour malt taste, plenty of near-burnt back-tongue resiny bitterness. Average body, long dry carbonized bitterness to the linger ... I liked it enough, I guess, but I wasn’t wild about it, unlike the Rigor Mortis ABT, I had no urge to try further samples of this one.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Cask at ’Volo Cask Days 2008’. Pours a very dark brown with a spare bubbly off-white head. Very nice aroma of resiny hops with Porter-like characteristics in the back. Flavour’s lightly roasty and quite hoppy along with some coffee and a long bitter finish. Body’s nice for a cask beer. Fantastic stuff!

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
on tap, DDC. Pours a dark brown with ruby undertones. Aroma of citrus, and hops, surprisingly IPA-like given the color. Flavor can be characterized as “bitter fruitiness.” I would compare it to a more citrusy ESB. Overall, I though this brew was seriously flavorful, with a delicious bitterness. Some may consider Penombre a bit too stylistically confused, but I think this is simply innovative. Nice.
