Black IPA. Again, an american invention. This style was born at the "Vermont pub and brewery" around 1997. It could be said that this beer tries to be an hybrid between a regular IPA and a porter. The Pénombre presents a light body and well expressed tofferaction tastes. The whole is however dominated by an evident bitterness, which stays always in balance with the other tates found in the beer. In the after taste, the bitterness and hops flavours are growing slowly dut surely, sip after sip.

Cask Days 2009 @ Bar Volo, Toronto, ON: A black IPA! Another in the series of ’beers I was going to homebrew not knowing they already existed’. FFS. Nice deep brown pour, decent beige head for a cask pull. Aroma is very hoppy, while simultaneously roasty and serving up a dose of molasses.. Great! An amazing hoppy taste is balanced by roasted malts, just what I’d hoped it would be! Awesome.

Black with Ivory head. Strong roast smells with a surprising fruity touch. Yes, full of yeast, chocolate and toffey taste. Love this black IPA. Again Au Dieu du Cie is my fetish brewer.

UPDATED: JAN 26, 2013 Update originally rated @ bieres et saveurs in 2009 A: chocolate, roasty App: pitch black sparing head good lacing. T/P: med body with long and intense bitter finish. Moderate carbonation. Oily texture. O: Still not a fan of this relatively new style. It’s straight on style.

On tap at DDC. This was a nice suprise. The first Black IPA for me. Roasty aroma, not much hop but that could have been the smell from the brew room. I think they were cleaning. It was moderately bitter with a long finish. It was dry on the palate. A nice introduction to the style, will have to find more to make this a better rating.

Tap @ DDC. Very roasted aroma here with no shortage of IPA hopiness. Taste is dry and hoppy, some toasted bread here. Mouthfeel is very refreshing with a hint at being more creamy than your average IPA.

Cask Days 2009 @ volo. dark murky brown with almost no head. nice pungent hops in the nose. the roasted malt shows in places but this drinks a lot more like an IPA then other example of this style i had at the fest. the most rounded and balanced beer i had at cask days, probably had a slight advantage because this one isnt a one off.

First black IPA /so cannot compare it to other examples of the style. Dark Brown with beige head. Fantastic aroma. All the sweetness and roastiness of a stout with a great piny hop profile. Bold bitterness. The roasted malts and hops combine and pack a great punch. This is balanced by a sweet malt profile. Creamy and velvety. Mmmm.
