3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
341ml bottle served in a pint glass.
A: Pours a dark brown to black forming a big bubbled beige head. Good retention and tons of lacings left in the glass
S: Roasted malts and flowery hops. Black IPAs are quite weird because they do have this mix of black roasted beers with pale and hoppy beers
T: Roasted and hoppy. Good balance. Roasted malts, notes of dark chocolate. Biscuity. Quite bitter which is a mix of roasted malts and hops bitterness
M: Medium body and carbonation. Roasted and hoppy bitterness aftertaste
O: Good drinkability. Great Black IPA. Another Dieu du Ciel! winner

BOTTLE. shared RW. Jet black with nice tan head. Dark choc/vanilla on the nose, with the dark choc up front and a smooth bite at the back end, more of a porter than IPA.

3.7 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
More like a porter with extra hops (which is not to say bad).
Pours a coal black with light, toffee colored head. Roasted chocolate and caramel on the nose with just a hint of floral hops.
Heavy on the palate with your typical roasted caramels and just a hint of chocolate and toffee. Hops come through lightly but remain on the palate just a bit longer than the roasted notes.
I’d give this a higher rating if it were just a porter, but as a black IPA it wants just a bit more balance with the roasted and hoppy notes.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Growler. I like it when black IPA’s are more like hoppy porter’s, so this is right up my alley. Strong hops, strong roast, strong beer!

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle: The aroma consists of moderate chocolate, cookie dough, lighter pine, and some faint burnt notes. It pours a dark brown with significant orange highlights. It has a two finger khaki head that quickly fades to a thin film outlined by a thicker soapy ring. There is some thin soapy rings left behind on the sides of the glass. The flavor starts with starts with moderate chocolate (milk chocolate and dark chocolate) with a touch of caramel, light roasted malt, and a hint of cookie dough. The finish has moderate pine, burnt notes, and light grapefruit. It’s medium bodied with mild carbonation and a somewhat soft moutheel. Overall, it definitely falls into the hoppy Porter category for me. Also, the burnt flavors are a little too much for my taste.

Unless I’ve been misinformed by two separate sources, DdC has actually stopped producing this beer. Luckily for me I live in a town of ignoramuses, so I picked up possibly one of the last sixers in existence. It was bottled in February, 2014, so I feel like it’s definitely lost some of its more pronounced hop notes, but man this stuff is still good.
Pours the darkest of browns with a beige cap that quickly fades to a thin film. Nose is chocolate, treacle, a lot of smokiness, a bit of pine hiding in the background. Taste is quite sweet through to the finish: sweet, smokey, chocolate malt, treacle, a hint of of liquorice and spice, lots of toasted notes. The finish is the real surprise though: an unexpected, but very pleasant, lingering bitterness, with heavy pine and bitter coffee notes. Alcohol is virtually undetectable. This was a really interesting beer and I’m sad to see it go.
(Note: I’m told it’s basically been replaced by the Disco Soleil, which is yet another great DdC offering, though completely different from the Penombre, so it seems a strange change.)
