Black IPA. Again, an american invention. This style was born at the "Vermont pub and brewery" around 1997. It could be said that this beer tries to be an hybrid between a regular IPA and a porter. The Pénombre presents a light body and well expressed tofferaction tastes. The whole is however dominated by an evident bitterness, which stays always in balance with the other tates found in the beer. In the after taste, the bitterness and hops flavours are growing slowly dut surely, sip after sip.

Pours deep dark with ruby reflects and medium tan head. Nice lacing. Hoppy nose. Aromas are roasted malts, coffee, caramel and huge resinous pine. Quite dry and bitter finish. Medium body, high carbonation. Powerful black IPA, but lack some sweetness and body. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Draft pour at their brewpub in Montreal. Black with foamy tan head - unexpected. Super bitter and aggressive hops. Doesn’t seem like an IPA or black IPA to me. I keep questioning if this is the right beer I asked for. Has a stout / red beer flavor. Weird.

Pour out of 11.2 oz bottle, dark black pour with tan head, aroma brought notes of dark fruit, cocoa, roast, hints of coffee, slight anise in there, hints of orange peel is as well, pretty interesting. Taste is a mix of dark fruit, cocoa, orange peel, anise, dark fruit, slight roast and coffee, finishing fairly bitter, slightly dry.

(Bottle) Black colour with frothy, beige head, leaving traces of lacing. Malty, roasted nose with notes of dark chocolate, coffee, pine needles, dark rye bread, liquorice and hints of grapefruit. Malty, roasted nose with black coffee, cacao, black rye bread, liquorice, grapefruit and a generous piney bitterness in the finish. Medium body, quite dry. Despite the piney bitterness, it’s not quite as aggressive as black IPA’s sometime are, but rather quite well rounded, relaxed and very well balanced. Tasty and very nice.

Pours an almost opaque dark brown with a thick and creamy head that settles to a nice dollop and leaves good lacing. Aroma is light coffee, cocoa, some toastiness and some slightly dank and earthy hops. Taste has some mild coffee and light sweet toffee notes, followed by some cocoa and toastiness. The hops kick in mid taste with some herbal and bright piney bitterness that continues to build as you drink. Finishes with a growing bitterness that presents a bit of spiciness in the aftertaste. Mouthfeel is creamy with a medium body and moderate carbonation. Fairly drinkable with a bright piney bitterness and decent dark malt flavors.

Bottle. Pours a clear dark brown body under a small fizzy beige head that had decent retention. The nose is pretty well balanced between the Porter qualities and the IPA notes. Nice and chocolaty with some light roast and coffee under citrusy and piney hoppiness. Nice chocolate malt up front in the flavor fading to a moderately bitter resiny hop finish that really lingers well. Some light coffee notes towards the finish as well. Medium bodied with soft fizzy carbonation and just a touch of a menthol like note late in the finish as well. Pretty decent BIPA.

From a 341ml bottle on 14/5/2014. Pours a dark, dark brown with a small head, with some yeast floaties at the bottom. Has a relatively mild roasty aroma, with some chocolate, resin and pine. In the mouth, it features heaps of chocolate, coffee and caramel with some sweet fruit in there as well. The bitterness is big and long, combining bog loads of roastiness and hops. Has a satisfying dry tang at the back, which pleads for you to take another sip. Has a medium body and medium to lively carbonation. A very good black IPA indeed.

Deep black color, khaki colored head half finger. Smells of sweet rye, graininess, some savory. Taste is very grainy, lot of hop bitter throughout, in the middle is a more roasted hop bitter, almost a coffee, then the finish is a plastic like bitter that I don't care for. A little sweetness in the form of a charred caramel but very little sweetness overall. Mostly a bitter with a cigarette ash quality and some roasted malt. Ok overall, not my style though. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle shared with and courtesy of wyzzywyz22. More fine work in getting me drunk with good beer. Sadly this one didn’t hit the high notes that night. Poured deep dark brown with a thin to medium beige head. Aroma is quite mild, something slightly medicinal, pine, some chocolate. Flavour was quite herby, roasted malts, bitter finish. Sorry, didn’t care much for this one. Although the porter leaning hybrid thing is...
