Black IPA. Again, an american invention. This style was born at the "Vermont pub and brewery" around 1997. It could be said that this beer tries to be an hybrid between a regular IPA and a porter. The Pénombre presents a light body and well expressed tofferaction tastes. The whole is however dominated by an evident bitterness, which stays always in balance with the other tates found in the beer. In the after taste, the bitterness and hops flavours are growing slowly dut surely, sip after sip.

Bottle frae Brew Dog on-line. Dark brown pour with a wee tan crown. Dark malts and roast protruded from the snout. A roast, choc and hop combo knitted in the flavour. A worthy enough take on da style.

341ml bottle from Saveur Biere.

Black stuff with big foamy head. Foam stays like a dusky cloud. Good earthy aroma. Very nice variaton and Dieu du Ciel doesn’t betray this time either.

Bottle from Rays in Tosa. Pours a very dark brown with tan highlights, and an off-brown head leaving some streaks of lace. Aroma has caramel and black malts and some earthiness. Taste is of sweet caramel, bitter malts, light chocolate and maybe some citrus. Medium bodied. Finishes mostly bitter. A reasonable brew, very little like a black ipa - a schwartzbier, perhaps?

341ml Bottle from Good Spirits Co, Glasgow (£3.80):
Dark & malty with some chocolate & roasted barely. Seem more like a porter than a black IPA, with coffee coming through as well. The hop presence is minimal & further cocoa with light caramel round things off.
Black with a 1cm, creamy looking head that is a ligh, tan brown & holds pretty well, showing no initial signs of reducing in size.
Toasted malts, barley & chocolate that mirrors the nose. Slightly more hops than in the nose but again it seems like a push to call this on a black IPA rather than a lightly hopped porter. There was some bitterness around the middle & sweet caramel right at the end.
Medium to full with a smooth feel & light medium carbonation. Very easy to drink with a alcohol well hidden & some sweetness towards the end. A light medium bitterness was noticeable throughout, more so when the beer had time to settle a little & the finish was a dry one.

Quite a good beer, although it was nothing like I was expecting after reading the label on the bottle. It is described as a black IPA on the bottle but in truth it was definitely leaning more towards the porter side of things with a lot of darker malts and toasted flavours coming through but still very nice.

A colablack beer with a medium and yellowish beige head. The nose of nicely balanced roastiness, some fruits and wood, hint of bitter almond. Interesting. Taste is roasted, some chocolate and pine, medium bitterness that still dries the taste. The end is slightly coffee, also hint of bitter almond. Medium bodied, balanced and smooth carbonation, pleasant to drink as black IPA. Bottling date was 14 months ago, thus not very fresh bottle but still balanced and great beer. As like this the roastiness is dominating probably more than the fresh bottle. The great smoothness.

12 oz. bottle, black color with thin off white head. Aroma is herbal tea and light roast.

Flavor has a large amount of spicy and herbal hops with weak roasted notes. The hops and malt are not balanced very well. Lots of bitter herbal and flower hops. Harsh bitterness. Light pine in here as well.

Overall I like this brewery a lot and they do a large variety of style very well. This one just doesn’t have enough roast. Perhaps this fairs better on draft, I would skip it in a bottle.

Pours black into a shaker. Mocha head with medium retention recedes to skim surface leaving a thin sheet. Dark chocolate and mocha aromas. Medium bodied with charred chocolate and caramel upfront turning to bitter espresso in the lasting finish.
