Black IPA. Again, an american invention. This style was born at the "Vermont pub and brewery" around 1997. It could be said that this beer tries to be an hybrid between a regular IPA and a porter. The Pénombre presents a light body and well expressed tofferaction tastes. The whole is however dominated by an evident bitterness, which stays always in balance with the other tates found in the beer. In the after taste, the bitterness and hops flavours are growing slowly dut surely, sip after sip.

Poured from a bottle. Dark brown color, small white frothy head. Pepper and musky hops aroma. Metallic pepper and hops flavor with flat pepper finish. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle- pours deep burgundy brownish black, thin khaki head that persists. Nose is herbal, nutty, biscuits, mild pine. On the tongue, medium to lighter bodied, mild resinous hops, nuts, roasted coffee bitterness and drying finish. More porter than black ipa but I could drink a few of these at 6abv ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

341ml bottle. Ruby red glowing, darkest brown colour with average to huge, frothy, fairly lasting, moderately lacing, beige head. Chocolately, dark malty aroma, notes of dark chocolate, cautious hints of treacle, some liquorice, toffee. Taste is dry, roasty dark malty, hints dark chocolate, a touch of toffee, cautious bitter hoppy overtones with a herbal touch and hints of spruce; dry, roasty finish. Not as hoppy as I’d expect from a Black IPA, has its strength definitely on the malty side.

12 oz. bottle. Pours a dark brown color with reddish highlights and a medium sized beige head. The aroma has a nice burst of milk and dark chocolate with roasted malts, very porter like. The flavor has more dark chocolate and roasted malts, later the earthy bitterness comes in. Not a ton of hop character to this. a bit of a mineral character to the flavor. Not bad, but If this is a black IPA I would like to see more hops.

Ordentliches black mit einer interessanten Mischung aus Röstaromen und grasigen Momenten. Dick, relativ komplex und durchaus ausbalanciert. Nicht schlecht.

11.5oz bottle, from Party Source for $4.79. Numbers notched in the label are 1-1 (who knows what that means). ABV is labeled 6.5%. Very dark brown color, close to black. Clear red around the edges. Thin off-white khaki head. Good retention. Leaves decent bits and dots of lace. Looks good. Good dark chocolate, roast aromas. Some light coffee, dark fruit flavors... Like juniper or bush berries. Hint of licorice. Some light, old-tasting hop taste. Who knows how old this is, but it doesnt taste fresh. Moderate sweet taste. Light to moderate bitter. Lighter carbonation. Moderate to bigger body. Lightly slick texture. Longer aftertaste. Decent black IPA, but I feel like it would be much better fresh, kind of pointless if not fresh. The only hop character I get from this is some light earthiness, light spiciness.

330 mL bottle from Beer Trappe, Lexington. Pours a dark brown color with a thin frothy tan head. Fair head retention. Aroma of roast, earth, sunflower seeds, herbal, piney hops and a hint of chocolate. The taste is bitter roast, bitter resin, herbal hops, some nuttiness and a bit of bright citrus in the finish. Medium bodied, lingering bitterness. Fairly bold compared to the Americans and their American invention. Solid beer.

I nice mix of the IPA and porter. I find at first it’s a porter and then at the end it has the floral hops. The bitterness is over 1/2 the flavour. Sadly I don’t understand the alchemy of the style.
