Black IPA. Again, an american invention. This style was born at the "Vermont pub and brewery" around 1997. It could be said that this beer tries to be an hybrid between a regular IPA and a porter. The Pénombre presents a light body and well expressed tofferaction tastes. The whole is however dominated by an evident bitterness, which stays always in balance with the other tates found in the beer. In the after taste, the bitterness and hops flavours are growing slowly dut surely, sip after sip.

Bottle. Cola brown. Cocoa and coffee grinds aroma. The taste adds bitter piney hops and earthy malts. Big mouthfeel all around. One of the better black ipas. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Unless I’ve been misinformed by two separate sources, DdC has actually stopped producing this beer. Luckily for me I live in a town of ignoramuses, so I picked up possibly one of the last sixers in existence. It was bottled in February, 2014, so I feel like it’s definitely lost some of its more pronounced hop notes, but man this stuff is still good. Pours the darkest of browns with a beige cap that quickly fades to a thin film. Nose is chocolate, treacle, a lot of smokiness, a bit of pine hiding in the background. Taste is quite sweet through to the finish: sweet, smokey, chocolate malt, treacle, a hint of of liquorice and spice, lots of toasted notes. The finish is the real surprise though: an unexpected, but very pleasant, lingering bitterness, with heavy pine and bitter coffee notes. Alcohol is virtually undetectable. This was a really interesting beer and I’m sad to see it go. (Note: I’m told it’s basically been replaced by the Disco Soleil, which is yet another great DdC offering, though completely different from the Penombre, so it seems a strange change.)

Bottle. Black pour with a small foamy head that fades to a thin ring and leaves some nice lacing. Really nice aroma of charred wood, burnt toast, pine, and cocoa. Tastes like ash, pine, cocoa, and light coffee. Moderate bitterness. Medium body. I love a good black ipa and this is a good one. Could maybe use a little more hops but I’m not sure how old this bottle is.

On tap. Pours black with a tan head. Roasted malt aroma with cocoa, coffee and pine aromas. Flavor starts off caramel malt with roasted smokiness followed by coffee and chocolate notes finishing with piney hop bitterness. Very smooth mouthfeel.

Bottle I brought back from Mile High Wine and Spirits. shared with Pinkzambia. Definitely dark. Hoppy bitterness but lacking the more up front hoppy flavor of the west coast variety popularized in recent years.

Bottle: Black is right as far as color and a small off white ring head. Aroma is pretty light - a tiny bit of malts but hops aren’t present in the aroma. Flavor is a different story - tasty. Porter and IPA getting married is about it. Coffee flavors with a mild hop balance. The hop presence is noticed in more of a perfume. Mildly pleasant.

Bottle from backlog. Very dark with a beige head leaving lacing. Aroma: roasted, old man, spices. Taste: salmiak, roasted, cocoa powder, spices, earthy, light Baltic. My bottle wasn’t really hoppy.

Bottle at home from an IP trade with theydon_bois. Aroma is malts led with sweet malts, toasted brown bread, cara malt grains, some pine needle hop. Opaque black colour with some dark red notes when held to the light. Loose light tan head. Flavour is initially malt led with soft roast, caramel malts, charred toasted bread, easrthy back of the throat roast in the back end. Hops are more subdued than other BIPA, but there is solid piney bitterness and some pine needle flavoured hops. Palate is medium, nice dryish finish and moderate carbonation. Lingering roast and burnt bread. Pretty solid malt forward black IPA but i need more hops!

Pitch black ; beige head. Aromas of lactose and chocolate, roasted malts. Taste bitter over sweetness. Fairly short. Good balance.
