Black IPA. Again, an american invention. This style was born at the "Vermont pub and brewery" around 1997. It could be said that this beer tries to be an hybrid between a regular IPA and a porter. The Pénombre presents a light body and well expressed tofferaction tastes. The whole is however dominated by an evident bitterness, which stays always in balance with the other tates found in the beer. In the after taste, the bitterness and hops flavours are growing slowly dut surely, sip after sip.

341 mil bottle from Broue Ha Ha, served cool in a tulip glass. Deep brown-black, with a nice mocha head. A nice blend of rich dark malts and resinous/pine hops, grapefruit and C-hops, dark and hoppy. Medium-full body with velvety, creamy effervescence. More dark malt than the nose, roasted and almost burnt, fairly similar hop notes of grapefruit, pine and resin, a bit of other citrus, pretty nice for the style, in my opinion; dry with good bitterness and a long, C-hop and roasted malt finish. Great integration.

Bottle from State Line. Pours hazy blackish with tan head Nose was resiny hops, dark malt, cacao, oats. Tastes very hoppy, with roasty dark malt, cacao, and a smooth finish. This is a great black IPA.

Swietne ciemne w zasadzie czarne IPA. slodowe dosc wyraznie, palonosc potezna, przypominalo nieco stouta.

Black color, thin head. Woody, malty, slightly smoky aroma. Flavor has malt, salty licorice, mild fruity notes. Not really black ipa. Old botte?

UPDATED: JUL 5, 2014 Bottle. Black, small head. Chocolate, roastedness, some citrus hops there. Med light bodied, dry. Bitter. Bit short. Roasty, light salty. Nice, but more of a bitter stout than bipa. Edit: getting more lime citrusy towards the end, quite nice overall.

(341mL bottle shared by a friend, think it must be 4mo+ old) Pours a deep brown with russet highlights, clear, tiny white head, no lace. Aroma is roast malts, light coffee, slight ash, anise, faint pine hop aroma. Flavour has a balance of sweet toffee dark malts and moderate roast, light coffee, cocoa powder, a bit of black licorice and dark fruit, light pine and orange/grapefruit peel. Finishes pretty dry and roasty with a light hop bitterness. Light to medium body with soft carb. I know this bottle’s freshness wasn’t flattering it because the hops seemed quite faded, unfortunately. More like a light porter with a bit of hops. Not bad, but not nearly as good as the DDC black DIPA I had on draught a few days prior.

Aroma is rich malts, some caramel, mocha, black licorice and guava. Taste is a dark rick maltiness with character similar to the aromas. Slight balanced hopiness. Finishes smoothly. The beige head retains fairly well.

Dark black appearance with a brownish head and nice lacings. The nose is roasted coffee beans, malty, and hoppy in the background. Medium mouthfeel. The flavours are mainly roasted malts, chocolate, and some piney hops. Aftertaste is bitter hops. Excellent black IPA with lots of roasted flavours and aromas.

Pours deep dark with ruby reflects and medium tan head. Nice lacing. Hoppy nose. Aromas are roasted malts, coffee, caramel and huge resinous pine. Quite dry and bitter finish. Medium body, high carbonation. Powerful black IPA, but lack some sweetness and body. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
